A Supercharged Lotus Elise?
posted by: nikolaiski

217hp, 0-96 in 4.4 seconds and a top speed of 240km/h. Lotus has introduced an all new "Elise SC", which runs an all-new, non-intercooled version of the Elise’s 1.8L 2-ZZ VVTL-i engine.

Eidentified by the new rear spoiler and unique alloy wheels, there are many similarities with the existing Exige S.

The Lotus-designed, Magnuson-produced supercharger is smaller than that of the Exige S, and is married to the intake manifold plenum as part of a single-piece casting. Combined with the absence of an intercooler and its associated pipework, this integrated supercharger/intake assembly contributes to an 8kg reduction in engine weight compared with the Exige S.

With 217hp and a kerb weight of just 903kg the Elise SC accelerates to 96km/h in just 4.4 seconds, 160km/h in 10.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 240km/h.

The Exige S also comes in for an upgrade, picking up a Performance Pack that lifts output to 240hp and includes uprated brakes and clutch as well as driver-adjustable launch control and traction control systems. With the new additions the 0-100km/h comes up in four seconds flat and top speed moves to 248km/h.

Lotus Exige S owners need not fret, because they still own their place on track due to a superior aerodynamics package, which generates up to 42kg of downforce at 160km/h. (MA)

the S2k is still heavier that's the problem.
actually with the supercharger in the lotus, it'll be dam fast on sepang leh.
but hard to say. you ask me i'll still bet on the supercharged elise over the S2K
the S2k is heavy leh at 1299kg kerb weight compared to the elise at 903kg( at 240bhp works out to 265 bhp/tonne, so the S2k supercharged will have to push out 345 bhp to match the elise)
you do the maths

for the Exige guys - Triple the airflow to intercooler

Triple the airflow to intercooler-'07 EXIGE S
After three months and 11 revisions I have successfully come up with a solution to insufficient airflow from the stock roof scoop on the Exige S. Inspiration for this came about after discussion with 4Carl this past summer. The stock intercooler suffers heat soak due to air actually flowing out (forward) from the factory scoop. Yes, it is true. The fix from Lotus for 2008 is moving the opening to a higher pressure area and increasing the frontal area of the scoop. That is a expensive proposition for 2007 owners.

So, I designed a set of baffles/ hoses/ diffuser duct to remedy this. There is very little extra space in the Exige S engine compartment. The baffles seal off the side scoop areas and via hoses and duct blow in reverse from the rear of the intercooler to the front. The rubber bellows is removed from the front of the intercooler. This provides adequate area to exhaust air from the intercooler then to cool the engine compartment.

This design is very similar to the way the intercooler is vented on the 2-11.
The major difference is the reverse airflow. This was neccesary because of space constrictions and it flows better! And it does not rattle. There is no drilling, no cutting and no modification to the car.

I will reproduce this setup for anyone interested for about $ 300.00
I am trying to attach pictures but still learning this Mac.
My e-mail is shoco@cox.net I will send pictures on request. As an acid test 4Carl will have first set in his hands 12/14/07 for evaluation.

I welcome any and all feedback.

These photos are courtesy of Ken Wright. They are of his car and the installation ALREADY looks fantastic. I am biased of course. Datalogs ? No As they say: your mileage may vary There are many factors that contribute to cooling. Some of these are, humidity, temperature, and airflow. The last of which depends on speed over time. Am I sophisticated enough yet to take datalogs? Not yet. Am I capable of making a superior cooling duct system for the intercooler? Yes.

Look closely. The bellows is removed. The roof scoop is plugged. This makes for low pressure at the front of the intercooler. It works. It works very well. Better than stock.

As above, this is my car. When the photos were taken I hadn't yet ditched the stock ducts but had plugged the intake scoop and pulled the bellows. I also had not trimmed the flexible ducts to a more usable length.

The stock ducts are glued to the intercooler and the roll bar cover with a tenacious rubber glue. They are available from Lotus as replacement parts and this is good because removing them in any form that makes them reusable is impossible.

I don't have any data logging or temperature sensing equipment. I do have some common sense and this setup with the larger intakes offered on the side of side of the car are a much better option that the Cup Car scoop that is forced to try and cram air through the restrictive roll bar cover. If there is any extra volume that the narrow portion of the stock intake tract can't handle it will just spill out of the intake at the front of the roof making the cup roof more of a device that creates drag and not cools the intercooler. In addition this ductwork allows removal of the roof with no compromises, very nice for track days.

This is similar to the solution used by Lotus for the 211 and in my opinion a great way to tackle the problem. The Reverie scoops that I've got make it that much better. It could be further improved by adding the RLS intercooler and pipe work.

I'm happy to be able to get this on the car. My thanks to Shoco for taking the time to make this available. The parts fit the car perfectly and it is easily worth the money.

[Howto] [Pics] Exige Scoop Grills

Next, you need to find some chunks of wood. Particle board works great, and drill them together to create a sandwich.

Trace your small template (for the inside) on the wood.

Bust out your trusty jigsaw, and cut that thing out!

Now you'll hopefully have a piece that fits INSIDE the STOCK grill just like the template.

Take one of your new cut pieces of mesh and place it BETWEEN the wood making sure to align the 3/4" and 1/2" outside edge parts.

Use a rubber mallet, and (depending on which side your doing), start bending the mesh down. I cut some relief cuts on the corners, worked well.

Now you should have a nicely made scoop mesh!!!

Here's my pair (I actually made sure to 'mirror' the mesh so they were both pointing the same direction)

Now to adhere them with the black silicon/adhesive. Before doing this, you need to curve your new mesh a little by rocking it across your thigh to fit the curve of the scoops. First layer of gooo...

Put on the new mesh, you can still bend it a bit to make sure it fits perfectly, and then added another layer of silicon goo...

FINISHED GRILLS! I swear these look factory.

Fit and contour is perfect.

Last crappy pic.

I need to get some better outside pix in the sun later...

CHEERS!!!!

Description

The Worlds Only Lotus Sport Exige 300RR. Serious inquiries only
History
The Lotus Sports Exige 300RR was built for Lotus' parent company, Proton Cars. Based on the award winning aluminum bonded chassis of the production Elise,
the Exige 300RR was Intended to be Lotus' reentry into International level motorsports. The one of a kind Exige 300RR is powered by a 400BHP Swindon built
GM V6 derived from a DTM unit. Designed primarily around the Japanese Super GT regulations as well as various national level GT Championships, it's
configuration could be easily altered to suit various race series. The Exige 300RR also garnered quite a stellar competition history. It's the only car to win the
12hr Merdeka Millennium Endurance race back to back (2005 & 2006). In 2007, it won the HKS Time Attack challenge in Malaysia, against the all conquering HKS
CT230. The car even competed in individual FIA GT and Super GT events in 2005, making it the only race vehicle to have competed in both championships. The
car was retired from racing in 2008 by it owners, Proton Cars. This is a rare opportunity to own a modern classic that is bound to appreciate considerably over time.
