TWO teens crashed and burned to death in a sports car along Sixth Avenue in the early hours of Aug 25 last year - and no one saw how it happened. The weather was fine, the road surface was dry and visibility was good. Yet the Mazda RX-5 went out of control and slammed into a tree and a brick wall. The car burst into flames. The bodies of Mr William Widjaja, the driver, and Mr Alexander Henry Davies, both 19, were charred beyond recognition and their blood had to be tested with DNA collected from their parents to ascertain their identity. Unable to determine what exactly happened, State Coroner Victor Yeo on Thursday said that he had to arrive at an open verdict on the deaths of the two teenagers. The coroner said that an inspection did not reveal any defect that could have caused the Mazda to go out of control.Taxi driver Wan Abu Bakar Ahmad, 57, told police that he had stopped to allow a passenger to alight near Jalan Haji Alias slightly before 4am, when the Mazda overtook him at '100-plus kmh'. The sports car then filtered left on the single-lane two-way road, which has a speed limit of 50kmh, to give way to an oncoming motorcyclist before it disappeared from his sight as it went down a slope. Minutes later, the cabby found the car wedged between a tree and the perimeter wall of a house and ablaze. Mr Widjaja died of severe burns while Mr Davies died of multiple injuries and severe burns. The convertible was also totally burnt. Mr Davies, a Briton, was about to start at the University of British Columbia in Canada while Mr Widjaja, an Indonesian national and Singapore permanent resident, was doing his second year at the University of London. The latter was here visiting former classmates from the United World College. Station Inspector Raimi told the coroner court that Mr Widjaja and Mr Davies had been with friends at Cafe del Mar on Sentosa from 12.30am till 3.45am. The group then decided to reconvene at the 24-hour Macdonald's outlet off Clementi Road. Although the car belonged to his friend's father, Mr Widjaja took the wheel.

A post-mortem revealed a blood alcohol content of 32mg in Mr Widjaja - more than half lower than the legally prescribed 80mg for drink driving, the coroner noted.

in today's paper.

guys, let's not discuss about "Widjaja" in the general folders.

if you must, do it in the private folders, away from the general public.

uly 1, 2008 Dad shields daughter from pickup with body  The accident happened at about 5pm on Sunday at the T-junction of Toa Payoh Lorong 1 and Lorong 6. -- PHOTO: THE NEW PAPER
MR Chan Tong Ming and his daughter were waiting at a traffic light crossing when a pickup lorry hurtled towards them.

His wife, Madam Chan Kah Noi, who was standing nearby could only watch in horror as the pickup ploughed into her husband and daughter.

Wanting to save his daughter, the 51-year-old used his body to shield 10-year-old Yi Shan from the impact. He lost consciousness with his arms tightly wrapped around her and died in hospital a few hours later, The New Paper reported on Tuesday.

The accident happened at about 5pm on Sunday at the T-junction of Toa Payoh Lorong 1 and Lorong 6. The family was heading from their Toa Payoh home to Junction 8 mall for dinner.

Mr Chan was rushed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital with severe head injuries and a broken right leg. Madam Chan, 42, told The New Paper that his heart stopped three times at the hospital. He couldn't be revived and died at around 8pm.
The pickup driver, who is in his 30s, suffered a cut above his right eye and was taken to the Singapore General Hospital.

Yi Shan was hospitalised overnight for injuries to her forehead and left leg. Her family withheld the news of her father's death until she was discharged on Monday afternoon.

Although Yi Shan tried to be brave and not cry when told of the bad news, she broke down when she got home and saw her father's coffin.
Madam Chan told The New Paper Yi Shan was the apple of her father's eye. The couple also have a son, Hao Yang, 13 who was at a friend's house at the time of the accident.

When The New Paper visited the family at the wake on Monday night, Yi Shan's left leg was still bandaged and she walked with a slight limp.

Madam Chan said her husband of 15 years was 'a perfect husband and father' who would always make it a point to spend weekends with the family. He would also help her buy groceries at the market.

With the sole breadwinner of the family gone, Madam Chan frets about the future. Mr Chan used to take home about $2,000 each month as a logistics assistant with the Republic of Singapore Air Force, which he has been with for more than 30 years.

Madam Chan told The New Paper in tears: 'He has been the sole breadwinner for the past 10 years. I've not worked for so long. I don't know what I'm going to do now.

'What am I going to do?'

=============

yesterday on the way home, the rain was crazy. heavy like hell one moment, and it just switch off the next. and then, it's BACK! heavier than ever.

the weather must be crazy. (either that, it's the wet rainy season again.)

do check those tyres. ie: Thread depth.  Legal is 3mm. Expert actually recommends 6mm.
and if you do change, get those wet season tyres. basically look for those "V" thread patterns tyres that channel water away from the center of the tyre.

roads wet, slow down. drive safe.
