the toyota crown type...
there were marks on the grass patch on the divider. Plus there was the begining of the railings (like the highway ones) so it sorta made a ramp. I guess if you hit it just right - not surprising the car flips. (Just like in the movies)

Safety council wants more care taken by heavy vehicle operators
By Carolyn Quek& Melissa Sim

CABBY Ng Eng Tian, driving behind a massive concrete-laden trailer on Saturday afternoon, saw it veer between lanes and slowed down immediately.

Hitting the brakes saved his life, he said.

Seconds later, the trailer careered into the van ahead of it, flipped on its side, and unleashed five slabs - each the size of a wall and weighing 11/2tonnes - on the heavy Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) traffic.

'Thankfully, I slowed down, or I would have died,' said Mr Ng, 53.

That no one was killed or seriously injured in the accident was sheer luck.

The accident has prompted National Safety Council president Tan Jin Thong to call for more care to be taken by those operating heavy vehicles with large loads.

Pointing to the recent accident, he said: 'For this type of vehicle, the concrete should be strapped down. The ropes or chains may not have been tight enough.'

He said if they were tight, 'the concrete would not have been flung so far'.

Each 2m-by-2m slab weighed about 1,400kg - equivalent to the weight of an average saloon car.

It is not clear whether the slabs were secured or how this was done.

One landed square on top of a van, narrowly missing its driver, who received outpatient treatment at National University Hospital.

The crash, which occurred at about 4.55pm just before the Stevens Road exit, left a trail of destruction on both sides of the expressway, leading to a massive six-hour traffic snarl.

Trees, metal railings and a lamp post along the central divider were splintered. One concrete slab, which was flung as far as the opposite side of the expressway, also caused a three-car pile-up.

The wreckage was so hefty, it had to be removed by crane.

A Land Transport Authority spokesman said a crane was sent down to clear the debris at about 7pm that day, and put upright the toppled trailer two hours later.

The driver of the trailer, who escaped unscathed, is helping police with investigations.

The company he works for declined comment when contacted yesterday.

Some heavy vehicles need special approval to ply the roads, and some even need auxiliary police escort. All have to keep to speed limits of 40kmh to 60kmh.

Keen to save time and money, however, drivers and companies often flout the law.

No official figures were available at press time, but Mr Tan, for example, said he had seen many heavy vehicles speeding along the expressway or travelling in the middle or right-hand lanes.

'Even if the trailer is empty, it should not travel above its speed limit,' he said.

A spokesman for security company Certis Cisco said some heavy vehicles flout the rules, which require them to be escorted by auxiliary police, who help ensure a smooth journey and regulate the speed of the vehicle.

First-time offenders face up to three years in jail and a $2,000 fine. A driver may also lose his licence for more than a year.

for this kind of accident/incident. if you are the van that kana the concrete slab, there's really nothing much you could have done.
that's when instinct kicks in. that van driver swerved n braked. (he was lucky)

Cancer survivor fatally hit by cab; hubby tries to end life

A woman who survived breast cancer was killed in a road accident yesterday morning, and her husband was so distraught he tried to end his life.

For more than 20 minutes, he hit his head against the road and tried to bite off his tongue. He was finally restrained by paramedics.

The tragedy unfolded at about 10.15am.

Madam Chan Yoke Chan, 61, a member of Paddlers In The Pink, a dragon boat team comprising breast cancer survivors, had just finished training at Marina Reservoir in Kallang.

She was crossing Sims Avenue towards Kallang MRT station when she was knocked down by a taxi. She was about 50m from a pedestrian crossing when she was hit.

Eyewitness Sun Ai Cheng, 29, who was waiting for a bus on the opposite side of the road, said in Mandarin: 'I heard a loud bang and when I turned around, the woman was tumbling from the taxi. She was thrown 6 to 7m from the taxi.'

The other members of the dragon boat team were changing in the toilets at Marina Reservoir when the accident happened.

A passer-by recognised Madam Chan's pink shoes and her paddle - trademarks of the team - and informed them about it. They rushed to the scene.

At 11.05am, Madam Chan's husband, Mr Chan Gee Kan, 65, and their 26-year-old daughter arrived. He looked for witnesses to the accident before the reality of his wife's death hit him.

He started banging his head on the road and had to be held back by passers-by, including The Sunday Times team who was there, and family members.

He then tried to bite his own tongue and stab himself with his keys, and asked a police officer to hand him a gun to end his life.

'I have no choice, I want to accompany her. She will be so lonely,' he cried.

Four men had to pull him back and he was later strapped down to a stretcher-wheelchair by paramedics to calm him down.

Paddlers In The Pink members were shocked by the death.

Mrs Angelina Ong, 53, its team manager, said of Madam Chan: 'She was so dear to us, like a family member. She was the most wonderful person you could have as a friend.'

The team would usually have lunch together after their Saturday morning training but Madam Chan had left earlier saying she had to meet her daughter.

The 63-year-old taxi driver was in a state of shock.

He apologised profusely to Madam Chan's husband before the latter's breakdown, and the two men finally shook hands.

Police said the taxi driver has been arrested for causing death by a negligent act.

Cops in car upset

A POLICE car on patrol turned turtle in an accident in Changi early on Sunday, injuring the two policemen in it.

A police spokesman said the car was on Changi Coast Road, headed for Nicoll Drive at about 3am when the accident happened.

The cause of the accident is still being investigated.

Neither the 21-year-old driver of the car nor his colleague, aged 26, were seriously injured, the spokesman said.

The officers, who are from Bedok Police Division, were taken to Changi General Hospital after the crash and treated as outpatients.

The wonderfully long and fast 8 lane (4 both ways)jurong buloh was closed off except for one lane on each side of the road this morning as there was a fatal accident. Trailer head without trailer was smashed in the front across the central lane divider. A pickup it crashed into was totaled with a dead person covered lying across 2 lanes. Human body parts was seen along a 20meter stretch of road.

Was driving home on the PIE earlier when I saw the electronic signboard saying "Accident after Thomson Road Lane 1 4 closed"

True enough there was a fatal accident... a trashed motorbike was at the island markings on lane 4 (where the merging lane from a side road to the PIE was)... and a motionless body lying in a pool of blood was right in lane 1... ambulance and police were there. I counted 1 taxi on lane 1, and 2 taxis, 1 van and 1 private passenger car along the road shoulder on lane 4 slightly further up...

Sian man... always accident accident... fatal accidents involving motorcyclists are the worst... especially in the wee hours of the morning like 2-3am!

On AYE towards keppel, before Clementi Ave 2 exit.

5 vehicle chain collision on Lane 2.

At the front, motorist pinned under front right tire of a concrete mixer. I can vividly see his face in agony.

2nd, 3rd 4th vehicle are all big commercial vehicles. Last in the row was a MPV.

I called 999 asking for ambulance FAST! Till now, the picture of that motorist's face still clear in my brain... gosh...

And traffic was heavy but flowing smoothly at ard 100kmh.

Which means vehicle 2nd, 3rd, 4th are all doing 100kmh split seconds before the accident.

MEXICO - A Texas man has been arrested for driving under the influence, falling asleep at the wheel and hitting bicyclists in a race.  One person was killed and 10 others were injured when Juan Campos, apparently drunk, crashed his car into the racers riding down a highway in Monterrey, near the U.S.-Mexico border.

According to police, the drunken Campos fell asleep at the wheel.  This photograph was taken by a city official at the exact moment of the accident.  It happened 15 minutes into the race.

A total of 452 cyclists were participating in the 21-mile race, which was canceled after the incident.
