Two others were injured when their car plunged into a ditch and hit tree along Old Upper Thomson Road.
Two polytechnic classmates died when the car they were in plunged into a ditch and hit a tree along Old Upper Thomson Road late on Tuesday night.
They were the rear passengers, identified as Mr David Li, 18, and Mr Mervin Teo, 19. It took rescuers nearly 30 minutes to extricate them from the back seat where they were trapped.

Mr Li, a second year IT student, died on arrival at the Singapore General Hospital while Mr Teo, also a second year student in engineering informatics, died shortly after.

The driver and his front seat passenger, aged 19 and 20, escaped with slight injuries. One of them was discharged from Singapore General Hospital on Wednesday morning.

The four are all students of Nanyang Polytechnic. The horrific crash happened at 11.45 pm as the car, a Mitsubishi Lancer, was travelling along Old Upper Thomson Road towards the Seletar Expressway.

It is not known if the two rear passengers were wearing seat belts.

Anyone with information on the accident can call the traffic police at 1800-547-1818.

FIVE pedestrians were hurt in an accident between two cars in Hougang on Thursday evening.

One of the five, a woman in her 50s, had serious head injuries.

It all began when one car, travelling along Hougang Avenue 2 in the direction of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3, collided with another car at the junction of Hougang Avenue 2 and Hougang Avenue 8, causing it to hit the pedestrians who were by the roadside.

Both drivers are in their 20s.

Eyewitnesses may call the Traffic Police hotline at 1800-547-1818

Dear All,

1)First of all, my family and i would like to sincerely thank you all for reading and posting comments regarding my mum's tragic fatal road traffic accident that happened on 21st August 08, 1907hrs along Hougang Ave 2 & 8 Junction.

2)Being the daughter of the deceased, i think no words can express my emotion regarding my mum's sudden death. In fact, it is not a overstatement to say that for the past 3 weeks. It was indeed an emotional roller coaster for myself and my dearest family members. From denial to anger, relief to grief but even up to this very moment. I still can't accept the fact that my dearest, most beloved mother had left us for good. It may sound silly but i still think that she merely went for a holiday. I never knew the pain could be this intense. It struck me real hard when it is at night. I just become so lost and despair without my mum. Yet, i have to act tough and not cry in front of my family because they are equally affected. Especially my dad.

3) My mum's accident could happen to any of your loved ones if we continue to allow drivers to speed and drive recklessly. A person's life is definately not a statistic that the Traffic Police tabulate and consolidate year after year so that our society knows the figures for serious / fatal accident trend. But we have to realise that each and every life is precious.

4)Sure.. Fear might instill in those who might have in a way or another witnessed my mum's tragic fatal accident. They might think that it is troublesome to be eye witnesses. But think again, if everyone of us are fearful of troubles ain't we then are allowing drivers to be scapefree and instill a mentality that reckless driving or speeding is not a big deal. You won't be severly punished anyway. Trust me! The figures will raise. Before soon, you will find yourself praying very hard every day that you loved ones are spared from these irresponsible drivers.

5) I do not at this time want to point fingers at any of the 2 drivers as i have no insight of what happened. But i want to find out what exactly happened to my beloved mum. What could have cause such a great impact to her brain and literally cause her to fade away. So, please... If you think you can provide infomation to the TP regarding my mum's accident. I strongly urge you to courageously step forward to tell the TP what happened.

6)Thank you. From the bottom of my heart.

Tai Shen & Family

i seriously think that regulation on qualifying drivers every 5 years or perhaps shorter, on road worthiness is essential (afterall, authority always like to say education is the way to go). authority used to do that but perhaps due to resources issues, they scraped that regulation years ago.

and i know of some senior citizens, above retirement age of 67, still driving (just get doc to sign off that they are fit when they are not). this in turn prompt frustrated drivers with 'tight schedules' to get even more frustrated.

unless authority put a stop (afterall they are the laws), in this modern world of 'time is $$$', machines get 'powerful' and where economics is the 'life line', such situations will only get more, not less.

Polyclinics have a strict set of protocol before we sign off on the driving license. (I can't say the same for the private GPs....) for that reason, sometimes patient's just go tho their GPs who literally just sign off as you said.
