Thanko gives you the Spy Button Camera (plus a golden ring as the remote control)

by Serkan Toto on July 2, 2009

Thanko, specialists of all things USB, brought us many good things in the past. Camera-wise, the Tokyo-based company rolled out a water-proof mini camera, a USB necktie with a built-in camera, not one but two video watches and (just recently) an HDV camera.

But these fantastic devices had one flaw: They were small, but not small enough. Reason enough for Thanko to announce the video camera button today [JP]. Needless to say the camera comes with a USB port (this is a Thanko product), 4GB of internal memory and the ability to shoot video in VGA at 15fps.

You can take videos for up to 90 minutes. Thanko says you can also take pictures in 1280 x x 1024 resolution (as JPEGs). What’s really weird is you also get a golden ring with the camera (apart from a total of 5 buttons). The ring doubles as your unassuming remote control and lets you switch the camera on and off. This is pretty cool.

Get the whole set at Geek Stuff 4 U for $68.64 plus shipping if you live outside Japan.

'Even friends can't calm patient down'
Patient not allowed to take girlfriend to ward after visiting hours allegedly turns violent

ANGRY: Mr Naim in light blue hospital attire, seen in CCTV footage trying to pick up a garbage bin and being restrained by friends and staff. PICTURE: COURTESY OF CGH

HOSPITAL RAGE: CGH patient relations officers Loh Wai Mun and Henry Soo showing where the incident took place on 16 Jun. TNP PICTURE: CHOO CHWEE HUA
HE WANTED his girlfriend to follow him back to his ward at a very late hour.

When told it was against the rules, he turned verbally abusive and got violent.

Although his left hand was bandaged due to a motorbike injury, Mr Naim, a 21-year-old national serviceman, tried to lift a garbage bin and hurl it at two hospital patient relations officers (PROs) on duty.

The officers at Changi General Hospital (CGH) had explained that the hour was late - 11pm, two hours after official visiting hours.

All hospitals maintain visiting hours so patients can get rest and are not inconvenienced by visitors at odd hours.

But before the PROs could calm him down, Mr Naim went berserk.

Unstable

Snippets of his aggressive behaviour were caught on the hospital's CCTV camera.

The incident, which took place on 16 Jun, is not an isolated one.

CGH and two other hospitals The New Paper contacted confirmed that they are seeing more cases of patients physically and verbally abusing hospital staff.

On that day, Mr Naim was chatting with his girlfriend and four other friends near the lift lobby of CGH.

After the group broke up at about 11pm, Mr Naim and his girlfriend who wanted to be known as Miss Siva, 21, stepped towards the lift lobby.

They were stopped by patient relations officers Henry Soo and Loh Wai Mun.

Mr Soo, who has been in this line for more than four years, said: 'It is all part and parcel of this job, we have to be prepared to deal with it.'

Added Mr Loh: 'We see an average of one case every month of patients suddenly becoming aggressive.

'Sometimes, they are mentally unstable and nurses call us to help pacify them.'

In this case, the patient could not be reasoned with.

Said Mr Soo, 53: 'I informed the patient that his visitor couldn't go up with him. But he immediately said that he needed his girlfriend to bathe him.

'I told him that he could manage that by himself as only one hand was injured.'

He added: 'The patient and his girlfriend kept insisting that they wanted to go up.'

Miss Siva, an ITE student, told the officers a different story - she claimed she had to go to the ward to get her wallet.

But the hospital denies that this reason was mentioned until the following day.

In a matter of moments, the confrontation turned violent.

Mr Loh, 53, claimed: 'When we kept telling them they couldn't go up, his temper flared up suddenly. He tried to push me.

'Mr Naim then said, 'I can be very rough' and looked like he was going to punch me.'

He alleged: 'He lifted his hand to throw a punch, I restrained his right hand immediately to prevent him.

'He then kicked me at the waist and I immediately fell down.'

Mr Soo then stepped forward to pacify the angry patient: 'I kept telling him, 'Brother, cool down'.'

But the patient became even more aggressive, he claimed.

Mr Soo claimed: 'I had to hold him firm towards the pillar as he was still very angry and violent, and wanted to hit me. He kept shouting vulgarities the whole time.'

Meanwhile, Mr Loh called the police for assistance.

Then, four of Mr Naim's friends entered the lobby as well. One of them pointed at Mr Loh, allegedly uttering vulgarities and threatened to hit Mr Loh.

Mr Naim could not be calmed down, even by his friends.

Agitated

Agitated, Mr Naim walked over to a large garbage bin at the hospital's entrance, and tried to lift and hurl it at the PROs.

His girlfriend and other friends restrained him.

The CCTV cameras caught only part of the drama as the hospital said they were pointed at the entrance of the hospital and not at the lift lobby where Mr Naim allegedly hit Mr Loh.

Said Mr Loh: 'He looked like he was going to hit me with it. His left hand was bandaged but he was very strong and could lift the heavy garbage bin all by himself.'

The tension fizzled out with the arrival of a plainclothes policeman who happened to be in the building at the time.

The policeman approached the group and asked Mr Naim's friends to leave the building and told Mr Naim to calm down.

A short while later, another police officer arrived and took everyone's statements.

The next day, Mr Soo and Mr Loh filed a police report against Mr Naim.

The police are still investigating the incident.

Despite several attempts, The New Paper couldn't get in touch with Mr Naim.

Miss Siva claimed that the PROs had pushed Mr Naim and held him by his neck during the tussle.

'We filed a complaint with the corporate affairs department,' she said.

When asked, Mr Soo said that at one point, he held Mr Naim on his right shoulder and pushed him back to the wall to restrain him from hitting him.

He said: 'It may look like I was grabbing his neck, but I wasn't.

Boy n lift (ceiling board incident)
« Reply #12 on: January 05, 2011, 07:36:08 AM »
Quote from: InPhinity

The boy who was injured in the Choa Chu Kang lift, when the ceiling board fell, was actually the culprit. CCTV footage showed him climbing up the railings and reaching out to touch the ceiling.

A spokesperson from Hong Kah Town Council sent in an email reply after investigating the matter which occurred at the lift B at Block 228 Choa Chu Kang.

This follows a contribution sent in by STOMPer Vishnu who saw the lift ceiling board fall on the boy, just as he was stepping out of the lift.

The boy escaped with a few scratches.

The spokesman wrote:

"The Town Council is deeply concerned over the incident and we have viewed footage of the incident as captured by the CCTV installed in the lift.

"The CCTV footage shows that the boy had entered Lift B of Block 228 Choa Chu Kang Central at about 1.01pm on Jan 1 2011.

"Seconds later, he is seen climbing onto the hand railings in the lift, which have been installed for the convenience of residents, especially our elderly. Based on the footage, the boy gained a foothold on the railings and reached out to touch the lift ceiling board.

"It was at this point that the ceiling board gave way and fell.

"We seek residents’ cooperation to use our lifts properly. Any misuse or tampering with the lifts and lift parts may lead to malfunction or faults. Such action may also cause injury and inconvenience to residents.

"We hope the boy is recovering well and we would be grateful if the boy or his parents could contact the Town Council to assist us to further investigate the case."
