TV actor Christopher Lee jailed for drink-driving
By Hoe Yeen Nie, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 10 May 2007 1522 hrs

SINGAPORE: MediaCorp actor Christopher Lee has been sentenced to four weeks in jail on charges relating to drink-driving.

He has also been fined S$4,500 and is disqualified from driving for three years.

His offences included causing injury to a motorcyclist and his pillion rider in a hit-and-run accident.

Lee arrived in court Thursday morning, accompanied by his lawyer and manager.

In passing his sentence, District Judge Terence Chua said Lee knew he had caused an accident, and could not be excused from failing to stop and check.

Breathalyser tests showed Lee's body contained twice the legal alcohol limit.

Lee had given over S$70,000 in compensation to the victims for their injuries, which the judge noted as "evidence of his remorse".

The judge said given the recent spate of drink driving accidents, a message must be sent to the public that "such risks are not acceptable and will continue to be sternly treated".

Lee will be appealing against the jail term, and is currently out on S$20,000 bail.

When contacted, MediaCorp Studios said it is inappropriate to comment at this time as Lee is appealing against the sentence. - CNA/ir/yy

Mediacorp actor Christopher Lee has been sentenced to four weeks' jail after being found guilty of drink-driving related charges.

He was also fined $4,500 fine and disqualified for driving for three years.

Those found guilty of drink driving can be fined up to $5,000, or jailed up to six months and banned from driving for at least a year.

Lee, 35, had been slapped with five charges relating to drink driving, including failing to stop after the collision, causing injury to a motorcyclist and his pillion rider, not rendering help to the injured, and moving his vehicle without a police officer's permission.

His black Mercedes-Benz collided with a motorcycle carrying two men at the junction of Serangoon and Kitchener roads at 4.13am on Oct 8 last year. The motorbike rider injured his face and hands, while his pillion rider suffered cuts on his face and legs. Lee left the scene after the collision, but was stopped by a police car and ordered to take a breathalyser test.

Lee will be appealing the jail sentence, and has been granted bail of $20,000.

Another local celebrity, former TV game-show host Benedict Goh was charged in court yesterday with drink driving and lying to the Traffic Police . If convicted, Goh could be jailed for up to six months and fined up to $1,000 or both.

Drink Driving

Quote
Drinking will impair your driving to some extent and reduce your co-ordination - turning avoidable hazards into potentially lethal ones. Black coffee, swimming or exercise as well as vitamins or hangover cures won't reduce the level of alcohol in your system. The more you drink the slower your reflexes and this means that you will lose the ability to maintain proper control of your vehicle.

The consequence of drinking and driving don't end with legal action. Being disqualified from driving means inconvenience and incurring of extra travel costs. If your job involves driving, you could be out of work. If you kill or maim someone, you'll have to live with your guilt. Worse, it may just be you who are killed.

When you drink and drive, you end up facing penalties that will scar you for life, and living with guilt of having put your life and other road users at risk.

Rather than risk the consequences, if you want to drink don't drive. Take public transport or a taxi instead, or arrange for someone to drive you home.

Take Note

Quote
If you have consumed alcoholic drinks at any place or event, do not drive. Get a friend who is sober to drive you home. Better yet, leave your car at home and use public transport (MRT, bus or taxi) to go home.

If you are the host of an event, ensure that all your guests do not drive home after they have consumed alcoholic drinks. Arrange for someone to drive them home, or hire a taxi. Never pressure someone to drink if you know that the person will be driving home later. You may be indirectly responsible for any possible traffic accident.

Legislation

Quote
The Traffic Police highlighted that many motorists are unclear about the drink driving law in Singapore. Under the Road Traffic Act, a person can be convicted of drink driving in two instances.

If the driver is found with more than the legal limit of 35 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millitres of breath, or more than 80 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millitres of blood, he/she is deemed to have broken the law and it does not matter whether the driver has perfect control of the vehicle, when caught.

Even when the alcohol level is under the legal limit, the driver can still be convicted if it is shown that he/she did not have proper control of the vehicle as a result of alcoholic intoxication.

Examples

Quote
A driver who is seen driving in a zig-zag manner may have a breath sample registering an alcohol level within the legal limit. But he will still be liable for conviction.

A driver who causes an accident by ramming into a stationary vehicle, for instance, can be liable for a drink-driving conviction, even though his breath-alcohol level falls within the legal limit.

Penalties

Quote
First Time – Drink driver will be fined between $1000/- and $5000/- or six months imprisonment.

Second Time – Drink driver will be fined between $3000/- and $10,000/- fine or imprisonment for a term of up to one year.

Repeated Time – Drink Driver will face enhanced punishment up to 3 times the penalty, a maximum of $30,000/- fine and three years' imprisonment.

Offenders causing death or serious injuries can also be caned up to 6 strokes.

All those convicted will be disqualified from driving for at least 1 year, even if they have not caused any traffic accidents.

legal limit of 35 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millitres of breath, or more than 80 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millitres of blood...

What does this translate into?? 1 drink?
However, different people metabolise alcohol at a different rate / pace.

Anyhow... dun drink & drive.

I remembered Zouk had that breatheliser tester near the toilet? isit still there? they should have that mandatory in all alcohol serving establishment..

it translate roughly to two beers. but it varies from person to person as you mentioned. due to the body composition etc. and also, how each of us break down the alcohol is different.

in any case, it does not take much to cross the limit.

would any of you guys be interested to get those portable breathalyzer for say around $20 odd bucks? we can arrange for a groupbuy for this. heck, we can even print the CelicaSG logo on it! .P

they should have breathalysers at the these areas. put one on the valet desk. refuse to give them the key if they drunk... but this may be detrimental to business.

yes, he died of chest injuries. Does not like to put on seat belts. Also, took out his stock steering wheel for MOMO. The MOMO killed him as he chest crumbled upon impact. I always keep my airbag steering wheel.
