Drink driving suspects nabbedBy S Ramesh | Posted: 28 May 2011 1502 hrs SINGAPORE: The traffic police have arrested 16 motorists suspected of drink driving, during a five-hour islandwide operation on Saturday morning.Between midnight and about 4.30am, officers conducted checks beyond the usual areas such as Clarke Quay.They made a total of 93 motorists take the breathalyser test.Sixteen of them -- 14 men and two women aged between 21 and 65 years old -- failed the test and were arrested for drink driving.The highest breathalyser result clocked was 81 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, more than double the prescribed legal limit of 35 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.Traffic Police commander Cheang Keng Keong issued a stern reminder to potential drink drivers."Do not take chances with your life and that of others. It will be too late for regret when something happens," Assistant Commissioner of Police Cheang said."In addition, if you are caught, you not only stand to lose your driving licence but (you) could (also) be liable for a jail term or even caning, should death or serious injury be caused. It is simply not worth taking any risk."Police have warned that those who are convicted of drink driving will be disqualified from driving for at least 12 months.They will have to take the theory and practical tests to get their driving licences again.First-time offenders can be fined between S$1,000 and S$5,000, or jailed up to six months.Repeat offenders may be punished with a maximum fine of S$30,000 and a mandatory jail term of up to three years.They may also get up to six strokes of the cane should they cause death or serious injury.-CNA/wk
