Car 'hits' volunteer in church, then speeds off
Police investigating incident in which warden suffered bruises on Christmas Day

By Teh Joo Lin
A BLACK car that drove into a church compound on Christmas Day allegedly hit a volunteer twice before speeding off.

The police are investigating the incident that occurred at about 10am at the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour in Siglap, just prior to a service.

The 37-year-old church volunteer, a billing operations manager who did not want to be named, told The Straits Times: 'A lot of people were in shock when they saw it happen.'

The volunteer was helping to direct traffic entering the compound when the car rolled in.

He put up his hand to stop the car because another vehicle was reversing into a parking lot.

But instead of waiting, the 'driver just moved on and banged me in the knees', he claimed.

Shocked, and thinking the car could have bumped into him by accident, the warden hobbled over to the passenger side of the car, which had the windows wound down.

'I said: 'Excuse me, what are you trying to do?' The female passenger shouted at me: 'But you are in the way!'' he recalled.

The volunteer then walked over to the other side of the car to speak with the driver, described as a bespectacled man of about 50.

The couple are not thought to be parishioners of the church and it is not clear why they drove into the church compound.

When the volunteer's request to swop particulars was rejected, he told the driver he would take a photograph of the car with his camera phone as evidence before walking to the front of the vehicle to do so.

'Just as I was walking to the front of the car, he accelerated and knocked me,' he said.

'I fell backwards onto the bonnet.

'I was shivering, I was really trembling because I was in shock already.'

The volunteer said the car rolled forward about a metre or so before it stopped and he slid off the vehicle - feet first.

'If I hadn't got my footing right I'd have landed flat on my face or head or back,' he said.

The volunteer claimed he then went round to the driver's side, again to exchange particulars, but was told: 'You've no right to ask me for anything and I am not giving you anything.'

The driver then sped off.

Although he did not break any bones, the volunteer said he sustained swelling and bruising on his knees.

He then reported the incident to the police.

Anyone who acts in a rash manner that endangers another's life or personal safety can receive a maximum penalty of six months' jail and be fined.

Football star Ronaldo escapes injury in horror smash

Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo walked away unscathed Thursday despite writing off his Ferrari in a spectacular car crash near Manchester airport.

Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo walked away unscathed Thursday despite writing off his Ferrari in a spectacular car crash near Manchester airport.

His luxury sports car's front end was smashed to pieces and it lost a wheel as he collided with a roadside barrier while driving to training, the morning after a disappointing defeat for his team.

Ronaldo's team-mate Edwin van der Sar, United's goalkeeper, was following in his Bentley at the time of the crash but was not involved in the collision, said police.

Skid marks were clearly visible leading up to the crash scene, and a photographer who arrived shortly afterwards described the 23-year-old Portugal winger's bright-red car as a "terrible mess."

But Greater Manchester Police said no one had been injured. "Officers attended and discovered a Ferrari had collided with a barrier," a statement said. "No one is believed to have been injured."

Witness Jody Lomax was driving behind Ronaldo when the collision occurred.

"The Ferrari went straight into the wall, his front left-hand wheel came off and then Ronaldo got out of the car," he said, according to the BBC.

"I was shocked. Anyway he was all right, he was walking -- he was a bit shaken... Obviously I was stunned at seeing a Ferrari go in the wall and seeing Ronaldo."

A spokeswoman for United said Ronaldo, the 2008 winner of the prestigious Ballon d'Or award, had not required treatment for shock or any other injuries and would be fit to play in Sunday's Premier League showdown with Chelsea.

"Cristiano is fine," the spokeswoman said. "It was on his way to training. He did not receive any treatment. He has trained this morning with the team and is OK."

Police officer Nigel Snell said that, given the damage to the car, it was "fortunate" that Ronaldo was not injured.

"We are trying to establish exactly what happened and I would appeal to anyone that may have witnessed the collision to contact police," he said, cited by the BBC.

Ronaldo played as a second-half substitute in United's 1-0 defeat away to Derby County in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final on Wednesday.

Barring any delayed reaction to the crash, he will be back in the starting line-up for Sunday's match at Old Trafford as United seek to overcome one of their major rivals in the battle to retain the Premier League trophy.

Fatal crash after hitting speeds of between 130kmh and 160kmh.

Investigations revealed Cpl Ng had a conviction for careless driving in 2004 and had committed a speeding offence six months before the fatal crash.
http://www.asiaone.com/Motoring/News/Story/A1Story20090118-115379.html

Cop's reckless driving caused girlfriend's death
State Coroner Earnest Lau recorded a verdict of misadventure on Corporal Ng's death, but said he was responsible for the death of his girlfriend Lin Mei Yan, a 25-year-old private school student.
Coroner Lau, basing his call on witness Tan Yong Seng's account of an apparent road race between Cpl Ng and another driver, said Cpl Ng drove recklessly and lost control of his car, which ploughed into a tree.
Mr Tan, a 37-year-old lorry driver, was at the wheel of a van in the early hours of Aug 30 last year when he saw Cpl Ng's white Mitsubishi Colt hatchback racing with a black car, both hitting speeds of between 130kmh and 160kmh.
The black car overtook Cpl Ng's and sped off. Mr Tan said Cpl Ng then lost control of his car.
It veered to the right, hit the kerb on the centre divider and rammed into a tree.
Ms Lin, who was in the front passenger seat, was not wearing her seat belt and was flung out of the car. She sustained head injuries and died at the scene. The car was a wreck and Singapore Civil Defence Force officers had to extricate Cpl Ng from it. He died 40 minutes later. Police could not establish whether he was wearing a seat belt because the entire front of the car was totalled.
Investigations revealed Cpl Ng had a conviction for careless driving in 2004 and had committed a speeding offence six months before the fatal crash. The couple were heading for Ms Lin's home in Teck Whye Lane when the accident happened.

Boy run over by truck at zebra crossing

Boy run over by truck at zebra crossing
Student, 9, had walked ahead of granny
By Chong Shin Yen
January 22, 2009

HE was impatient about having to wait 20 minutes for his younger brother to finish his classes.

FATAL: The truck driver (above) showing where Li Yun (below) was lying after he was knocked down. PICTURES: SHIN MIN DAILY NEWS

So Li Yun, 9, told his grandmother that he wanted to go home first so that he could read his books.

She agreed, but less than a minute later, the Primary 4 schoolboy was run over by a tipper truck right before her eyes on Monday.

He died in hospital an hour later.

The boy's father, Mr Li Changrun, said: 'I don't understand why he made the request that day. Usually, he would wait for his brother so that they can all go home together.

'If only he had waited for just 20 minutes, this might not have happened.'

Mr Li, 42, a life sciences researcher, told The New Paper that his mother-in-law had gone to fetch his daughter, 12, and Li Yun from Pei Tong Primary School on Monday afternoon, as she always did.

The trio then walked to Block 319, Clementi Avenue 4, to wait for the siblings' younger brother, 5, to finish his kindergarten classes.

Mr Li said that soon after they reached the kindergarten at about 4.30pm, Li Yun told his grandmother, 67, that he wanted to go home on his own.

'My mother-in-law was fine with it as our flat in Clementi West Street 2 was only three bus stops away,' he said in Mandarin.

'She left my daughter at the kindergarten and walked Li Yun to the bus interchange so that he could take a bus home.'

While they were crossing the zebra crossing on the slip road along Clementi Avenue 4, Li Yun was knocked down by a lorry.

He was walking a few metres ahead of his grandmother and had almost reached the end of the zebra crossing when the accident happened.

Serious injuries

PICTURE: LIANHE WANBAO

Mr Li said that Li Yun suffered multiple injuries, especially on his lower body and legs. His right foot was also crushed.

The boy was still conscious but bleeding badly. His grandmother broke down and craddled him while they waited for the ambulance.

Mr Li, who was at work, received a call from the police informing him of the accident. He rushed to the National University Hospital, but his son had died.

'My mother-in-law told me that the accident happened very fast and she could not react fast enough to pull Li Yun back,' said Mr Li.

'She walks slower than him and was not holding his hand when they were crossing the road. She has been reproaching herself since the accident and is still traumatised.'

Li Yun's sister took her younger brother home on her own after their grandmother failed to return to the kindergarten.

Mr Li, who is from Nanjing, China, came to Singapore in 1997. His three children were born here and he is now a Singaporean.

Mr Li said that Li Yun was a quiet boy who loved reading books and comics.

He said: 'The school year had only just begun and he had already finished reading all his Primary Four textbooks.'

Mr Li added that Li Yun's results were among the top 25 per cent of his cohort last year. 'He was never a cause of worry for us. I even had hopes of him following in my footsteps and becoming a science researcher in future.'

He said that his younger son has been asking for Li Yun but the family has kept the news of his death from him.

Mr Li said: 'My younger son is very close to Li Yun. The two boys will play and go everywhere together.

'I've told him that his brother is sick and is in hospital. I don't know how he will react if he's told that he can no longer see his brother again.'

A police spokesman said that the lorry driver, a man in his 60s, was arrested and released on bail pending investigations.

The driver told Shin Min Daily News that he had checked to make sure there was no one at the zebra crossing before he drove on.

Then he felt his rear tyres running over 'something', so he stopped to check.

Crying in pain

Said the driver: 'I got down from the truck and saw the boy in between my wheels. He was bleeding profusely and was crying in pain.

'The boy's grandmother was carrying him in her arms and I quickly called for an ambulance.'

Li Yun's parents collected his body from the mortuary yesterday and he was cremated in the evening.

Police are appealing for witnesses to call 1800-255-000.

Just last week, two other students were seriously injured when they were hit by a van while on a pedestrian crossing.

Primary 5 student Leif Lieow, 10, and Primary 3 student Tan Heng Joo, 8, were walking home together on 15 Jan when the accident happened along Old Airport Road.
