8-year-old boy dies after truck knocks him down

A TRUCK reversing onto a pedestrian walkway ran over an eight-year-old boy on Tuesday, killing him as he walked home from school.

Jadon Sim, described by his form teacher as a bright and jovial boy, had finished a supplementary Mandarin class at Changkat Primary School at around 3pm and was heading home with his aunt.

As they entered the walkway between the Simei train station and East Point Shopping Mall, a goods lorry began reversing towards them.

A passer-by who would give his name only as Eric, said the truck sounded its horn at some pedestrians while backing in from the main road.

Seconds later, Mr Eric spotted Jadon and his aunt walking behind the truck and yelled out to the driver to look out.

'The woman tried to pull the boy away from the truck but it was too late,' said Mr Eric, who was about 5m away from the accident site.

One of the boy's relatives later told The Straits Times that Jadon and his aunt were walking away from the truck and were hit from behind.

When the driver realised he had struck something, he moved the vehicle forward - which appeared to throw the boy backwards.

It is believed that the truck was heading towards a household goods store along the walkway to unload products.

According to the Traffic Police, 42 of the 190 people killed in road accidents last year were pedestrians.

woah.. tragic.

please reverse with care. know that many of you got those radar sensor, video cam thing.. but nothing beats slowing down, turning your head around to check back.

as for those with children, do educate them regarding the danger of reversing car/van/lorries.

are they allow to reverse onto the walkway just to unload goods? Walkway should be for pedestrians not for lorry to reverse onto to unload goods, damn lazy.

some people would just walk behind cars & reversing vehicles. have seen so many near misses.

This is just an 8 year old boy. They dont pay so much attention to their suroundings, but am sure they will move away if they see and heard a slow reversing vehicle.  Bloody son of a bitch must be reversing in some speed.

i seen kids coming out of their dad's car before he reverse to park and their mum leads them the other side thru the back of the car... DUH!! then, see the angry father waving & cursing.

It's an accident waiting to happen.

haiz....mother does not know the danger or could not even bother what danger is...of course the kids wont know also....mother DIDNT teach them mah :evil:

last nite, one woman was walking across the road, while our car was already approaching very near to her,  what she did was, looking at us,  and still walking slowly taking her own sweet time,  she was not crossing at the traffic light junction....see this kind of ppl,  cant not imagine her kids will be taught how to cross the road safely lor  :evil:

yup i've seen many of them. worse are those at a cross road where the walking man has turned red. Then they glare at u when u r just about to push off....

I was driving along a 2 lane road towards Cantoment one night. its was rather late and the street was deserted.

Out of nowhere I saw a rooster came out of the footpath trying to cross the road . I was not really  surprised because I thought it came from the nearby Indian temple.

Next out of nowhere a "black mama" came dashing out of the footpath also trying to across the road.

Immediately I flash my headlights and sound my horn. Guess what happened next.


The chicken got a shock and ran back towards to the footpath.

The "black mama" got a shock but continues to dash across the road. I missed him by a couple of metres . Thank god.


Moral of the story .... Roosters/Chickens are smarter than "black mamas' !!!

wait till you see those foreign indians / bangladeshis on bicycle dasing across the zebra crossing. all you could see are the whites of their eyes and their teeth when the scream in shock as u jam your break!!

haha...kns...what about the driver that didn't try to stop? or did he?  :shock:

reminds me of my close call with a dog. same thing, he dashed half way at a junction from the left (footpath). so i slow down and siam towards the left. knn, he saw me and turn back towards the footpath. i jam brake like crazy and swerve to the right. luckily he didn't turn around again. either way i hit or don't, i also die because i was riding and somemore had a pillion.
