ROUND ONE - IRELAND RALLY

Citroen reflects on the perfect start to 2009 (1/2/09)
Defending WRC title holders Citroen and Sebastien Loeb got their 2009 campaigns off to the best possible start today, with a repeat of their one-two Rally Ireland finish from 2007.

Loeb and co-driver Daniel Elena took control of the rally after the opening loop on Friday morning before gradually pulling clear of their rest of the field, while Sordo and Marc Marti tucked into their wake to hand Citroen a maximum points haul in the Manufacturers Championship.

Today’s result was Loeb and Elena’s 13th consecutive sealed surface win and their 10th in the C4 WRC.

"Even though we weren't on the ideal rubber for the first loop, we were able to control from in front," said Loeb. "Don't get me wrong; this weekend's win was no stroll. Given the delicate conditions, it was essential to have a car that was easy to drive and my C4 WRC was perfect from start to finish. Today's victory was obviously the best way possible to kick off this year's championship."

Dani Sordo was equally pleased with his result: "I'm very happy because coming second means that Citroen leaves Ireland with maximum Manufacturers' points, and it was great to have a perfectly trouble-free run, too. The conditions were very difficult, and going the full distance without making any mistakes was a challenge in itself! This result is a terrific confidence booster for the rest of the season"

Citroen Sport Director Olivier Quesnel was delighted with his team’s one-two performance but warned that the next round - Rally Norway - would be a completely different challenge: "Our team has lost none of its hunger for success and everyone played their part to perfection, including our two crews, of course, who both put in a remarkable display given the atrocious conditions,” he said.

“We had been hoping to start the season with a win, if only because the 2009 calendar features just 12 rounds, with only two on asphalt. There will be a high price to pay for any mistake this year. The fact that we are leading both championships after the season's curtain-raiser means we can go into the next event in a more relaxed frame of mind. That said, we won't be favourites because the second round takes place on a terrain that tends to be more suited to the Scandinavian specialists..."

ROUND TWO - NORWAY RALLY

Stobart consolidates its place as the leading Manufacturer Team (17/2/09)

The Stobart VK M-Sport Ford Rally Team continued its productive start to the 2009 WRC season when all three of its crews scored driver or manufacturer points on Rally Norway.

Stobart now sits third in the manufacturers’ standings and is the leading Manufacturer Team in the series, eight points clear of the Citroen Junior Rally Team.

Norwegians Henning Solberg/Cato Menkerud led the way for the team by finishing fourth overall. And with the crews of Matthew Wilson/Scott Martin seventh and Urmo Aava/Kuldar Sikk eighth the team recorded its second triple points finish from the two events run so far.

Stobart’s snow specialist Henning Solberg was in a confident mood heading into his home event. He experienced gear change problems on the opening day but built his speed as the event went on, taking a stage win on SS14 and moving ahead of Dani Sordo into fourth. He kept the place to the end to match his result on the previous round in Ireland and continue his best ever start to a WRC season.

“I’m very happy to have only the top three drivers in the world in the top three rally cars ahead of me,” said Solberg. “It was the perfect rally in terms of the stages and its organisation which made it very enjoyable and it means a lot to me to be the first Norwegian home.”

Briton Matthew Wilson had a trouble free, ending the opening day eighth overall and spending much of Saturday and Sunday locked in a battle with 2003 World Champion Petter Solberg. Unable to hold off the flying Norwegian on Sunday, Wilson settled for seventh overall, 10.2 seconds adrift of sixth. Wilson is now sixth overall in the drivers’ championship standings - his best-ever position.

“Overall it has been a very positive weekend for me,” he said. “I’m happy with my driving but I’m kicking myself because there were a few places where I was just too cautious and probably dropped too much time. It was great to be fighting with a driver of Petter’s calibre and experience though, and we can take a lot away from that.”

In the team’s third car, Estonian Urmo Aava initially struggled to get into a good rhythm and dropped 40 seconds after nosing his Ford Focus RS WRC into a snow bank on SS8. However his confidence improved over the following two days and he narrowed the gap to team-mates Wilson/Martin ahead to just 13.5 seconds by the end of the rally.

Aava said: “That was a tough rally. On the first day we didn’t find the right rhythm and made some little mistakes which cost us too much time. Saturday morning was much the same but after that we started to get into better shape and it became more enjoyable. Our times were a lot better on Sunday so I’m happy about that. This rally is about experience and I picked up some important lessons about the set-up for snow events; we made some good progress during the event.”

ROUND THREE - CYPRUS RALLY

A perfectly controlled display on the final day of the 2009 Cyprus Rally enabled Sebastien Loeb and Danie Elena to claim the WRC's first mixed-surface round since 1996.

The crew of the N°1 Citroen C4 WRC led from flag to flag to notch up the 50th world class win of their careers. Fourth place for Dani Sordo and Marc Marti has taken Citroen further clear at the top of the Manufacturers' World Championship standings.

The third day of action of this year's Cyprus Rally took crews back into the Troodos Mountains, but today's tests threw up their own special challenge. The leg kicked off with the 30-kilometre Foini stage which was followed by a 15-minute remote service break.

Competitors then faced the longest test of the weekend which took the form of the incredibly twisty 40.54km Anadiou stage. The event finished with a return to Anadiou Dam (11.70km) which crews had already contested on Saturday.

Despite an overnight lead of 49 seconds, Loeb couldn't afford to control from in front on Foini.

"I wasn't getting Mikko Hirvonen's split times, so I had to push quite hard to make sure he didn't get too close," related the five-time World Champion at the remote service park in Anadiou. "There was a lot of mud about, but we survived unscathed.
There are still two tough stages to come and we will need to stay on our guard all the way to the finish."

Dani Sordo succeeded in warding off the threat from Petter Solberg by conceding just a handful of seconds to the Norwegian driver: "I had a much better feeling this morning. I am quite pleased with the way I'm driving, as well as with my time. I am completely focused on defending my position."

Sebastien Loeb was feeling confident about his chances of winning by the end of the long stage: "I tried to make sure we stayed on the road without taking any risks. Mikko took a fairly big chunk of time off us but everything is under control."

At the same time, however, Dani Sordo was knocked off third place by Petter Solberg: "I stalled in a hairpin and dropped about 10 seconds. After that, I thought it was preferable to make sure we scored Manufacturers' points for Citroen. The fact that Petter was ahead of us changed nothing on that front."

The final stage didn't produce any last-minute drama and Sebastien Loeb and Daniel Elena were able to savour their third win from three since the start of the season.

"To have reached our half-century is nice, but it's just another statistic. To tell the truth, my thoughts are already turned to our 51st win! This rally went well for us from start to finish. Our C4 WRC handled perfectly, both on the loose and on asphalt," said Loeb.

Another statistic: this weekend's result has taken Sebastien Loeb and Daniel Elena's record to 13 consecutive podium finishes, a sequence which began on the 2008 Rally d'Italia Sardinia!

ROUND FOUR - PORTUGAL RALLY

Boring as it may be, its fourth in a row for Loeb.

Sébastien Loeb, Daniel Elena and the Citroën Total World Rally Team extended their unbeaten run since the start of the 2009 World Rally Championship by securing their fourth win from four – and their 51st world class success – today in Portugal. Dani Sordo and Marc Marti were also on form in the Algarve where they notched up their second podium finish of the year to put Citroën further clear at the top of the provisional Manufacturers' standings.

Following two relatively long legs on Friday and Saturday, the third and final day of the 2009 Rally de Portugal was
much shorter and featured two visits to a loop of two stages near Loulé. It then finished in the same way as the
event had started, with the closing super-special in the Estadio Algarve.

In spite of the handicap of running first on the road, Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena kicked off Sunday's action
with two fastest times: "We were in the same situation as we had been on Day 1. Even so, despite having to sweep
a clearer line through the dust for Mikko [Hirvonen], we were a little bit faster than him. Yesterday, when he was
having to do all the roadsweeping, we were much quicker. If you take all that into account, it suggests that we had
the edge in identical conditions. That's a very promising pointer for the next few rallies, but we've still got the job in
hand to finish off first…"

Dani Sordo and Marc Marti had to contend with the problem of hanging dust but were still third: "Today isn't much
fun for us because we've got little to gain and potentially everything to lose! Even with the cars starting every two
minutes, the dust just isn't clearing. We also suffered from dust getting in our C4 after the sill was slightly
damaged by a stone. The sun was very low this morning, too, so we really weren't able to see much and I took
special care not to make a mistake…"

After the 30-minute service halt, the two Citroën C4 WRC crews returned to the undulating Algarve hills for a
second attempt at the same two stages. The overriding aim of Sébastien Loeb and Dani Sordo was to hold on to
their respective positions, which saw them drive defensively, even if that meant dropping a handful of seconds. The
two Citroën drivers were then the stars of the show on the final test in front of an enthusiastic, packed-house crowd
at the Estadio Algarve where Sébastien and Dani respectively got the better of Mikko Hirvonen and Petter Solberg.
"Today's result takes our score to four wins from four rounds, which is the best start to a season we have ever
made," remarked Sébastien Loeb after the podium ceremony. "As ever, it wasn't an easy weekend. We made a
small error on Day 1 which forced us to push hard to make up for lost ground, but the second leg went perfectly for
us and we were able to control from in front this morning. It's good that Ford chose not to play a tactical game on
Friday afternoon. We preferred to play it straight on Saturday, too, and it's nice to have won that way."

Dani Sordo finished in third place and was happy to have mixed it with the front-runners over the three-day event:
"As soon as it became clear that I wouldn't be able to catch Mikko today, I decided not to take any risks. I felt very
comfortable with my car throughout the rally, and that's a good omen for the rounds which come next."

ROUND  FIVE - ARGENTINA

Citroen team reflect on the perfect Rally Argentina (26/4/09)

After taking its second one-two result of the year in Argentina, and moving further ahead in both the drivers’ and manufacturers’ title races, the management and drivers of the Citroen Total World Rally Team reflected on their weekend’s work.

"This rally gave everyone in the team a chance to shine," said Citroen Racing director Olivier Quesnel.

"This event is particularly tough on the mechanicals, but both our C4 WRCs proved perfectly reliable and they took it all in their stride. In addition to the strength of our cars, Sebastien and Dani drove with their head and put in a great performance to claim 15 fastest times from 23. They didn't make any mistakes and they both succeeded in turning on the speed when they had to. We fully deserved today's one-two result," he added.

After wrapping up his 52nd WRC victory, Loeb said he had special memories of the event in 2004 when his then team-mate Carlos Sainz took his own record to 26 WRC wins driving a Xsara WRC.

"So much has happened since then," said Sebastien. "We were second behind Carlos and Marc that year. Since then, we haven't been beaten here in Argentina. It's always nice to win this rally. This year's event was difficult to begin with and we had to drive flat out until Saturday lunchtime. The situation then tipped in our favour when Mikko Hirvonen hit trouble and we were able to control from in front after that. That said, I tried to keep up a quick pace all the way to the finish because it can be so easy to make a mistake over a jump, or by clouting one of the rocks that line the stages here. It's been a dream start to the season for us!"

Dani Sordo finished second overall to dislodge Mikko Hirvonen from second place by one point in the chase for the drivers' title: "I felt comfortable throughout the weekend. This is our second one-two finish of the year and it's a great result for the whole team. My intention now is to defend my second place in the championship..."

Like I said last season ... Loeb's dorminance and refusing to retire and give chance to the younger generation is bad for the sport ... If this continues ... the Championship will be over before June ... meaning he will be world champion by then and they might as well end the season early and the sponsors drop their fundings.

Alternatively, the WRC committee should really go for new locations cos some of the experience drivers like Loeb can now drive with his eyes close   ..... maybe Rally Singapore-Pulau Tekong  ...   ;D

ROUND 6 - ITALY (22-24/5/09)

Latvala wins Rally d’Italia - Sardegna! (24/5/09)

Finn Jari-Matti Latvala has won the 2009 Rally d’Italia after a riveting three days of competition on the scorching roads of Sardinia

Latvala, 24, led the rally from start to finish in his Ford Focus RS WRC, despite a disadvantageous road position on Saturday and Sunday, which put him first though the slippery gravel stages.

Today’s win was the second for Latvala, who became the youngest ever winner of a World Championship Rally on Rally Sweden last year.

Latvala won the event by 29.4sec from his own team-mate Mikko Hirvonen - giving the BP Ford Abu Dhabi Team a perfect one, two result and a maximum 18 points in the manufacturer’s championship.

As stopped at the finish control after SS17, an elated Latvala leapt from his car and ran around to kiss his car’s bonnet. “It’s such a relief!” he said. “I want to say thanks to the team and to [team principal] Malcolm for letting me do this. It’s a great thing for me to win this rally and also for the team with a one, two. It’s been unbelievable, but I’ve been lucky too. I’ve made mistakes earlier this year, so this win has come at a very important time.”

Hirvonen was next to complete the stage and immediately went to hug and congratulate his team-mate. “It looks like second place is my destiny,” joked Mikko. “We had a good rally, with a really good fight but this is how it is. Jari-Matti definitely deserves this result so that’s fine.”

Citroen Total team driver Sebastien Loeb finished third, 1min 43.7sec behind Latvala. After watching his record-breaking run of six consecutive WRC wins come to an end with his worst result since November 2008, the Frenchman said he was relieved to get to the end of the event.

“Third place means we keep the championship lead, and we lose only two points to Mikko, so for the moment that looks okay,” said Loeb. “It’s good to finally get a result here after all the trouble it has caused. It just didn’t work out for us this weekend. Everything we tried didn’t work, so after all that third place isn’t too bad.”

Citroen privateer Petter Solberg finished fourth in his Xsara WRC. “It was exciting today but the car didn’t feel right out of service and we lost out to Loeb,” he said. “My car was overheating again towards the end and in these temperatures this is the best I could do. Overall it’s been an excellent rally. The team have been great and we’ve shown consistency. I though maybe I could get third today. It’s not bad though.”

Citroen Junior team driver Evgeny Novikov rounded off the top five places in his C4 WRC. The result was a career best for the 18-year-old Russian. “It was a very good rally for me and we had a lot of fun,” said Novikov. “Next I want to get a factory team drive and to win the World Rally Championship!”

ROUND 7 - GREECE

Mikko Hirvonen wins the Acropolis Rally! (14/6/09)

BP Ford Abu Dhabi Team driver Mikko Hirvonen has won the Acropolis Rally of Greece, round seven of the 2009 World Rally Championship, after a perfect drive through the toughest conditions of the season in his Focus RS WRC.

The 28-year-old Finn carried a comfortable lead into Sunday’s final five stages, and kept out of trouble to finish 1min 12.9sec ahead of the man in second place, Citroen Junior team driver Sebastien Ogier.

The win was the eighth of Hirvonen’s WRC career and ended a victory drought that extended back to Rally Japan in 2008. After four second places this year, a perfect 10 point finish reignites his battle with Citroen’s Sebastien Loeb for this year’s drivers’ championship title.

Two rallies ago, Mikko trailed Loeb by 20 points, but a maximum score here, combined with Loeb’s exit on Saturday, means he’s now just seven behind. It was a remarkable turn around for the Finn who looked in a vulnerable position as road sweeper on Saturday morning.

“It really did look very difficult at the start but it worked out okay - a perfect weekend!” said Hirvonen. “It’s been a clever drive with no mistakes and no punctures. We thought before this event that if you get through without any problems you’ll be okay. It’s great for the team. Now we’re back in the game again - the timing couldn’t have been better!”

On the occasion of his first ever WRC podium finish, Ogier was celebrating too: “Perfect!” said the Frenchman. “This weekend was all about conservation. We made no mistakes and we looked after the car and the tyres. Just one puncture all weekend and the car has run perfectly. I couldn’t have hoped for a better result that this.”

Hirvonen’s team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala finished third, 32.1sec behind Ogier’s C4, to conclude a remarkable salvage job after going off the road on Friday. Latvala’s efforts earned Ford a maximum 18 points in the manufacturers’ championship, and went some way to restoring his team’s faith in him after his Day one disaster.

“Things can turn around quite quickly,” he grinned. “It was important for me to get this result, because now we have a better chance against Citroen. It’s my second podium in a row, so that’s a positive too. The next rounds in Poland and Finland are important for me and the team - I want to do better there.”

ROUND 8 - POLAND  (26 -28/6/09)

Mikko Hirvonen wins Rally Poland! (28/6/09)

BP Ford Abu Dhabi Team driver Mikko Hirvonen has won his second consecutive WRC event by claiming victory on the brand new Rally Poland, round eight of the World Rally Championship.

The momentous win, the ninth of his career, promoted Hirvonen, 28, into the lead of the drivers' championship standings with a one point lead over Citroen driver Sebastien Loeb; the man who has won the title for the last five years.

In blazing sunshine, and in front of thousands of spectators, Hirvonen completed the rally closing Super Special without a hitch and drove his Ford Focus onto the finish podium with a winning margin of 1min 10.3sec.

But just as Hirvonen was sealing victory on the final 2.5km head-to-head stage, his team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala - on course to complete a one-two victory for Ford - was throwing it all away.

In an almost unbelievable twist of fate, Latvala clipped a sand barrel on the apex of a corner and broke the right-hand steering arm of his Ford Focus. At the next corner his car speared into a metal barrier - wrecking its suspension and getting stuck fast. After a frenzied effort to get the car free again a distraught Latvala and his co-driver Miikka Anttila eventually resorted to pushing it. Retirement came shortly after.

The drama handed second place to Citroen Total team driver Dani Sordo who, despite a determined attack through Saturday morning's stages, had looked all but certain of third place today. In the event, that place went to Henning Solberg of the Stobart VK M-Sport team.

Hirvonen held the lead of the rally since Friday's second stage when he snatched the position from Loeb. However, any chance of an ongoing battle with his rival evaporated on the very next stage when the Frenchman retired after hitting a tree stump.

Watching from the finish line as Latvala's drama played out in front of him, Hirvonen was totally stunned. "I can't believe what I'm seeing," he said.

Later, Hirvonen gave a fuller account of his feelings. "For me it was a fantastic rally from start to finish," he said. "When Sebastien made his mistake on Friday, I thought it would be a good. Sordo pushed us harder than we expected on Saturday but on these roads I really enjoyed the fight. Okay, despite Jari's mistake we're still in the lead of the drivers' championship by one point, and this is the first time I've ever won two WRC rallies in a row, so that feels good. Now I want to make it three in a row on my home rally in Finland."

"I still don't really know what to say about Jari-Matti," he added. "It's definitely something you wouldn't expect to happen. It came at a really, really bad time. There was no pressure on him but mistakes do happen."

Dani Sordo was happy with his unexpected last minute promotion. "Third place was not bad, now second is better but I'm really disappointed for Jari-Matti," he said. "The rally has been a good for me. Yesterday I tried to pressure the guys ahead but on the second passes my speed wasn't there. I will try and work on the situation before Finland. I have a test planned before the rally and I will try something different in the car to give me more confidence."

Latvala's last stage catastrophe and eight points for Sordo was a huge disappointment for Ford in the manufacturers' contest. A maximum 18 points would have pulled the squad to within six points of Citroen. Instead Citroen head to Finland 17 points ahead.

After finding his best form on the rally's final day, Henning Solberg was delighted to bring his Ford home in a podium place. "Wow, what an end to the rally," he said. "I've been struggling with the feeling but today it came much better. Now I'm really looking forward to Finland; that will be my rally. I will have the right pace on Friday there."

Petter Solberg was fourth in his 2006 specification Xsara and felt his place relative to the other drivers' cars was about right. "I have to be realistic; this is the best result I could get," he said. "Earlier in the event Ogier and Henning should have been beating me, so to keep up with them in this old girl isn't bad. Maybe we would have done better without the oil on the screen today, I don't know."

Briton Matthew Wilson brought his Stobart Team Ford Focus home in fifth. "It's been tough but enjoyable; the stages here are awesome," he said. "Getting consistency in the pace notes is tough, but it’s been really good preparation for Finland and it will be a help to have had three days driving at these speeds. We took it steadier today but this afternoon we had to push because Holowczyc was getting a bit too close."

Sure enough, the Stobart team's Polish guest driver Krzysztof Holowczyc finished sixth to become the first Pole to score points in the World Rally Championship. A three-time winner of Rally Poland, most recently in 2005, Holowczyc said he had enjoyed himself at the wheel of his Ford Focus.

"I was last in a World Rally Car five years ago and it's amazing how they’ve changed!" he said. "It’s been a fantastic rally and this is my best WRC finish ever - which was a big surprise at the end. I have to thank the fans, I have never seen so many people and flags and their energy and the atmosphere has really helped me along."

After his Citroen-assisted salvage job today Sebastien Loeb brought his C4 to the finish in seventh to collect two drivers' points and four for Citroen in the manufacturers' championship. "It's better than nothing," he shrugged. "Even one point could be very important so I'm happy to take them. This has been a rally to forget for me. I hope it will be much better next time."

Citroen Junior Team driver Conrad Rautenbach finished eighth to take the last drivers' championship point.

Go Mikko Hirvonen!

but last time also like that... Loeb ease off the pace only to come from behind and finish them off in the final stages.

that's why he's known as the iceman.... cool, clam, collect. plotting each move to pin point accuracy.

it's unlikely that he would exit again. especially after doing it twice in a roll.

ROUND 9 - FINLAND

Hirvonen wins Neste Oil Rally Finland!  (2/8/09)

Mikko Hirvonen's resurgent form in the 2009 World Rally Championship continued today when the Ford Focus RS driver scored a dominant maiden victory on his home round of the series, Neste Oil Rally Finland.

The result was Hirvonen's third consecutive victory this season, the tenth of his career, and moved him further ahead at the top of the FIA drivers' championship standings, three points clear of defending champion Sebastien Loeb, who finished second today.

Victory on Rally Finland, the fastest round of the World Rally Championship, is seen by most drivers as the ultimate prize in the championship calendar - but it was especially sweet for Hirvonen, 29, who lives in host city Jyvaskyla and was tackling the event for the eighth time.

On last year's event he finished second, trailing his Citroen rival Loeb by nine seconds. However this year Hirvonen led from the second stage in his BP Ford Abu Dhabi team car, beating his rival fair and square by 25.1 seconds.

Hirvonen climbed onto the roof of his car at the finish control and punched the air in celebration, "I've been watching this rally since I was a kid, and now I've won it myself it's an absolutely fantastic feeling!" he said. "The rally went exactly like we planned. I always knew it would be close with Sebastien. I've enjoyed myself all weekend. It's absolutely fantastic!"

Five time champion Sebastien Loeb was Hirvonen's biggest threat throughout the rally but said his challenge effectively ended after he dropped a wheel into a pot-hole on SS15, pushing the tyre off the rim and losing 13sec.

"It was a good battle with Mikko, but he was really fast here," said Loeb. "It was looking good for Mikko to begin with but after my puncture it was over. I lost too much time and it was not possible to come back - the gap was too much. But okay, we are here, we lost two points in the championship - but it's better than losing ten like we did on the last couple of events! It will be an interesting end to the championship I think."

After moving ahead of Dani Sordo on Saturday, Hirvonen's team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala took a well deserved third place, 24.8sec behind Loeb, and was relieved to make the podium after his last stage disaster on the previous round in Poland.

"I've never had to fight so hard for third place!" said Latvala. "I had extremely big pressure on Friday because of what happened in Poland, then I was really, really sick on Saturday and had to fight Dani - who was driving his best ever Rally Finland - then finally I had to keep the position to the end"!

Sordo finished fourth, 16.2sec behind Latvala, after one of the best drives of his career. Once known more for his ability on sealed surfaces than gravel, Sordo marked himself out as a true all-rounder after an amazing performance on all three days.

Sordo never put a foot wrong and played the perfect team role on the final day when he was asked to safeguard Citroen's manufacturers' series points position rather than going after Latvala. "It was a good, good fight with Jari-Matti and I'm happy because he was so fast here," said Sordo. "My car has been perfect, I'm happy with its performance and my feeling in the car on these stages was good. I think I can go a little faster but we needed this finish for the manufacturers' championship."

Like last year Finland's Matti Rantanen proved one of the sensations of the event. Last year he finished seventh on his first event in a World Rally Car. This year, on only his second world rally car outing, he finished fifth after fending off a last day attack from Citroen Junior Team driver Sebastien Ogier, driving this event for the first time in a world rally car.

Rantanen started the day 17.5sec ahead, but lost all but 0.6sec of that advantage to Ogier before the final stage. In the end, however he clung on to the place by 0.3sec. "That was close!" said Rantanen. "A really good fight with Ogier, but I'm really happy now - it's incredible. I hope now to drive some more rallies but a lot depends of teams and sponsors."

Sixth placed Ogier was one of the first to congratulate Rantanen. "It was a fantastic result for him. I can't believe it - maybe he found another cut!" said Ogier. The Frenchman later said a small mistake had cost him the place: "It happened on the first corner, but even with that this has been a very good rally for me. It’s not a problem to finish fifth or sixth, but for sure fifth would have been better!

Seventh place went to another supremely talented local driver, Jari Ketomaa. Tackling his first event at the wheel of a world rally car, Ketomaa brought his Subaru Impreza WRC to the line 49sec adrift of Ogier. "I wanted to get more here because we have been fifth-fastest on some stages and that's where I wanted to finish," he said. "But okay the speed was good, we were beating on the door of those ahead, so I'm happy about that."

Eighth place, and the final drivers' championship point, went to Stobart Ford team driver Matthew Wilson. "That's out first point here, after a few times of trying but being unlucky," said Wilson. "Okay, it's not been a great rally, we need to work on a few things before we come back, but the stages today have been just awesome."

Ford team boss reflects on a 'dream weekend' in Finland (2/8/09)

The boss of Ford's rally team, Malcolm Wilson, has praised the efforts of his drivers Mikko Hirvonen and Jari-Matti Latvala on Rally Finland, saying their first and third places made it a 'dream weekend' for Ford.

Rally winners Hirvonen and co-driver Jarmo Lehtinen won by 25.1sec to extend their lead in the FIA World Rally Championship to three points with three rounds remaining. It was Hirvonen's third straight rally win and Ford's fourth consecutive victory of the 2009 season.

Team-mates Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila joined their fellow Finns on the podium by claiming third in their Focus RS WRC. Latvala also topped the top speed chart by winning the penultimate special stage at a remarkable average of 131.56kph.

The results enabled Ford to close the gap on the leaders Citroen in the manufacturers' world title fight to 14 points, and capped a perfect week in which Ford announced it would extend its commitment to WRC for a further two years into 2010 and 2011.

"It's been a dream weekend for Ford," said Wilson. "After the results we've had it's something else to build on for the remaining part of the season. Both drivers did exactly what we were looking for."

Wilson summed-up Hirvonen's performance as 'absolutely outstanding'. "Without question, it was his best drive," he said. "Every stage he was always consistent. It was a big step even from last year, to the point where he said he was taking fewer risks this weekend than last year when he finished second. I think that's a message to Sebastien - there's a little bit more still to come."

Wilson said that his second driver, Jari-Matti had driven superbly in difficult circumstances. "I can't remember anybody else being under as much pressure going into a world championship rally - particularly their home event. So to come on the podium is a great turnaround from where we were in Poland."

Gerard Quinn, Ford of Europe's senior manager for motorsport said: "Victory in the country that is regarded as the spiritual home of rallying is a tremendous achievement. Four consecutive wins in conditions ranging from the blisteringly fast roads in Finland to the rock-strewn tracks and searing heat in Greece demands a blend of strength, speed and reliability from both man and machine and I look forward to us challenging in Australia next month."

Kimi Raikkonen was driving at the Finland Rally last weekend. He was doing pretty well but crashed out on Day 3 going too fast on a tricky narrow bend when his car went too wide.

Sebastian Vettel was also present at the Rally but did not race.

F1 star Sebastian Vettel considering WRC drives (2/8/09)

Red Bull Racing Formula 1 driver Sebastian Vettel has expressed a desire to follow Kimi Raikkonen's lead and tackle a round of the World Rally Championship.

Vettel travelled to Finland this weekend and met up with Citroen Total World Rally Team drivers Sebastien Loeb and Dani Sordo, before heading out to the stages to witness the action of the fastest round of the WRC.

“This is my first time at the World Rally Championship and it’s been fascinating," said the German. "It is high speed and it’s nice to be out at the stages to watch it, although unfortunately I’m not driving!

“It is nearly as quick as F1, but with no run off and on gravel. I was able to get some advice from Sebastien Loeb, and there is no one better. I have plenty to do in F1, but who knows maybe one day I will compete in the WRC - I wouldn’t mind doing some drives in the future.”

Loeb, meanwhile, said he had been impressed by the performance of Ferrari F1 driver Kimi Raikkonen in Finland, even though he failed to finish after rolling his car into a ditch on Saturday.

"I thought he was really good," said Loeb. "He was only one second per kilometre off the pace of Juho Hanninen, and the best drivers in his category, and to do that here in Finland, on his first time, that's not so much - so I'm sure he was confident.

"It's important if you want to do this kind of rally to have good notes, and he stayed on the road until yesterday when something happened, but it can happen to anybody. I was surprised - he was driving really fast," he added.

Kimi Raikkonen to make WRC debut in Finland (29/6/09)

Ferrari Formula 1 star Kimi Raikkonen will make his World Rally Championship debut at the next round of the WRC, Neste Oil Rally Finland, which starts on 30 July.

Raikkonen, who was F1 world champion in 2007, will drive his own Abarth Grande Punto S2000 in front of his home crowd in the country widely regarded as the home of rallying.

He will be co-driven by fellow Finn Kaj Lindstrom, the man who formerly partnered multiple WRC champion Tommi Makinen.

Alongside Lindstrom, Raikkonen has already contested three non-WRC rallies this year but the upcoming round in Jyvaskyla will be his maiden outing on gravel.

Raikkonen made his rally debut in January on Finland's Arctic Rally, finishing 13th, and followed that with 17th on another snow event, the Rally of Mikkeli. He retired from his asphalt rally debut, the Italian Rally della Marca, after clipping a low wall and breaking his car's suspension.

A total of 90 crews have registered for this year's Rally Finland, the highest number for a WRC qualifying round this year. There are 18 World Rally Cars amongst the entries and drivers representing 25 different nationalities.

Simon Long, the boss of WRC promoters ISC, said: "I've said before that the WRC is built on heroes and iconic figures - and they don't come any bigger than Kimi Raikkonen. It's superb news for the Championship and hugely exciting that he'll be competing in Finland."

ROUND 10 - AUSTRALIA

WRC: Loeb wins Repco Rally Australia!  (6/9/09)

Citroen Total team leader Sebastien Loeb returned to his rally winning best today, taking victory on Repco Rally Australia after a thrilling three-way fight on the event's final, and longest, day.

Loeb completed the brand new rally, round 10 of the FIA World Rally Championship, 12.5sec ahead of BP Ford Abu Dhabi Team driver Mikko Hirvonen who was second. Loeb's team-mate Dani Sordo was third, 4.6sec further back after losing out in a nail-biting battle with Hirvonen that went right to the wire.

Today’s win was the 53rd in Loeb’s record breaking WRC career and his sixth this season. After a run of poor results in the middle of the year, a maximum 10 championship points today puts the Frenchman just one point behind series leader Hirvonen with two rallies to go - firmly back in contention for a sixth consecutive WRC drivers' title.

Loeb and co-driver Daniel Elena climbed onto the roof of their C4 WRC at the finish control to celebrate the win - their first since Rally Argentina in April. Their result was a tactical triumph for Loeb, who chose to hand the lead to Hirvonen on Saturday night in exchange for a better road position today. It was a gamble that paid off perfectly.

"This one is a good one," said Loeb "It was a hard fight, and because it's been a long time since our last win it feels especially good. It was really important for the championship to win here. We've done it and I'm really happy. Spain is next and we're one point behind Mikko - the championship is really interesting. It will be an incredible fight to the final I think."

Gunning for a fourth consecutive rally win this weekend, Hirvonen had no option but to drive flat out today to try and overcome his disadvantageous road position. He was helped by damp conditions through the opening rainforest roads, but on the drier sections he couldn't match Loeb's pace, and ended up locked in a thrilling battle with Sordo that was settled on the final stage.

"It was a really tough weekend; there have been many rallies this season where we've been absolutely flat out from start to finish and this was one of those," he said. "But I couldn't help it - Citroen did really well yesterday and we didn't have a chance today. Maybe it would have been a different story if I hadn't been first on the road, but there are so many ifs... We need to forget this one now and move on."

Dani Sordo was shaking his head as he crossed the finish line, but could console himself with another excellent performance on gravel and another valuable points haul for Citroen, which leads the manufacturers' championship, 18 points ahead of Ford. "I pushed really, really hard to try and keep Mikko behind but it was impossible," he said. "Okay, I lost second place but it’s okay; I'm still happy with what we've got."

Fourth place went to Citroen Junior Team driver Sebastien Ogier. The Frenchman led the rally on Thursday night and had been one of the star performers of the first half of the event. An off-road excursion on Saturday dropped him out of the lead battle but he produced a string of rapid times today. "Apart from one mistake yesterday it's been a very good weekend for us," said Ogier. "We were able to fight with all the best drivers in the World Rally Championship and the car worked well, so I'm very happy for everybody in the team!"

Like Ogier, Jari-Matti Latvala showed rally winning potential early in the event, but was left rueing two mistakes which dropped him to fifth. My rally was lost with the two punctures," he said. We got off to a fantastic start; we were leading the rally, but it just didn't work out this time, unfortunately. We got some points, which I'm happy about, and at least I finished."

Stobart Ford team-mates Matthew Wilson and Henning Solberg finished sixth and seventh respectively. Starting today's contest less than one second apart, a mix of spins and brake problems for Henning and a puncture for Wilson ruined what could have been a tense, inter-team scrap. "It’s a shame really, it's made this afternoon a little bit boring with nothing to push for," said Wilson. "It would have been nice to finish off with a big battle."

Henning completed the final stage with his brakes working properly. "We found a piece of plastic in the reservoir," he said. "We are here now, and I am happy with the place, but not performance, because we had a lot of problems."

Argentinean driver Federico Villagra rounded off the top eight places after a trouble-free rally in his Munchi's team Ford Focus RS WRC.

New Zealand driver Hayden Paddon was the best placed Group N driver, bringing his Mitsubishi Lancer to the finish in ninth. The result capped a great weekend for the 22-year-old who, on Saturday, was named winner of the Asia Pacific division of the Pirelli Star Driver program for 2010.

Hirvonen named Rally Australia winner after Citroen penalties  (6/9/09)

In a shock development late on Sunday night, BP Ford Abu Dhabi Team driver Mikko Hirvonen has been named the new winner of Repco Rally Australia after Stewards handed Sebastien Loeb, Dani Sordo and Sebastien Ogier time penalties for a technical infringement.

At Sunday evening's post event scrutineering, Loeb's Citroen C4 WRC was found to be fitted with a front anti-roll bar link which did not comply with the homologation form of the car.

Representatives from the Citroen Total World Rally Team agreed that part of the anti-roll bar link on his car was different to the one on the homologation photograph.

After establishing that the C4s of Sordo and Ogier were fitted with the same part, Stewards levied a one-minute penalty on each of the three cars, as well as reprimanding the Citroen team for using a part which was not homologated.

The Citroen team are not appealing the decision, which means the amended results are now final.

Victory for Hirvonen means his lead over Loeb in the drivers' championship standings increases to five points. The changes mean that Citroen's advantage over Ford in the manufacturers' series is now 13 points.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hirvonen: It's a shame the thrilling battle was decided like this (7/9/09)

BP Ford Abu Dhabi Team driver Mikko Hirvonen has given his reaction to the late night Steward's decision which promoted him from second to first place on Repco Rally Australia.

The Stewards imposed a one minute penalty on the Citroen C4 cars that filled three of the top four places, a decision which dropped Sebastien Loeb below Hirvonen into second place and Sebastien Ogier below Jari-Matti Latvala into fifth.

"It's a shame that after such a thrilling battle for three days the result of the rally is decided in the stewards' room," said 29-year-old Hirvonen.

"I suffered a points loss in Portugal two years ago, so I know how Sebastien, in particular, must feel tonight. This decision has a major effect on the championship standings and we now go to Spain with a five point lead."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Citroen team boss apologises to Loeb for 'administrative error'  (7/9/09)

The boss of Citroen Racing, Olivier Quesnel, has apologised to his lead driver Sebastien Loeb for the technical irregularity which cost him the lead of Repco Rally Australia today.

Loeb was the highest profile casualty of a post-event decision by Stewards to impose a one minute penalty on all three Citroen C4 WRC drivers, because their cars were fitted with a front anti-roll bar link which did not match the car's homologation form.

Quesnel said: "We accept the decision given that the photo on the homologation form does not match the part fitted to the car. The difference had no effect on either the performance or reliability of the car; it was simply due to an administrative error and does not stem from any desire to cheat. On behalf of the team, I would personally like to apologise to Sebastien Loeb and Daniel Elena who scored a superb victory on the stages this weekend."

Sebastien Loeb said: "I am obviously disappointed, but you've got to accept it when the regulations are applied. Instead of being just one point behind Mikko Hirvonen, I now have a five-point deficit to make up. That clearly complicates matters regarding our bid to win a sixth title, but this won't have any effect on our determination to
win in Spain..."
