This explains why some who literally pen their entire love and sexual experience on facebook keep having relationship problems.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Study: Facebook use fuels jealousy, hurts relationships
(By Sharon Gaudin-11 Aug 2009)

Worried that your relationship is going south? Maybe it's time to get off Facebook.

A study released by the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, shows that the Facebook social network creates increased jealousy in users' romantic relationships.

The study, which was published in the latest issue of the bimonthly CyberPsychology and Behaviour publication, concluded that the more time people spend on Facebook, the more jealous they get.

""Facebook gives people access to information about their partner that may otherwise not be accessible," said Amy Muise, a PhD student in psychology who conducted the study with student colleague Emily Christofides. "This may include details about their partner's friendships and social exchanges, especially interactions with previous romantic or sexual partners."

The simple availability of information - whether it's a girlfriend's posts or photos and details about her friends and exes - seems to increase a person's desire to search for even more information, say researchers.

"It becomes a feedback loop," Christofides said. "Jealousy leads to increased surveillance of a partner's Facebook page, which results in further exposure to jealousy-provoking information.

The study, which surveyed 308 Facebook users between the ages of 17 and 24, noted that most said they were aware that poking around their significant other's Facebook page would increase their jealousy. However, the users also said that they simply couldn't withstand the temptation.

"It fosters a vicious cycle," Christofides said. "If one partner in a relationship discloses personal information, it increases the likelihood that the other person will do the same, which increases the likelihood of jealousy."

Facebook usage seems to be tough on college students in general.

Last spring, a Ohio State University study found that college students who use Facebook spend less time studying and have lower grades than students who don't use the popular social networking site.

And last December, the same OSU research team released a study showing that the need for popularity is pushing people to disclose more and more personal information on Facebook.

The earlier study showed that 76 per cent of people surveyed were concerned about their personal privacy, yet they still revealed a lot of information, such as birthdays, email addresses, location and photographs.

Muise said in that study that a person's desire for online popularity was directly related to how much information they post online.

Facebook 3.0 For iPhone Submitted. Now Let’s Count The Days Until It’s Available

by Michael Arrington on August 16, 2009

Facebook has submitted v. 3.0 of their iPhone application to Apple, Joe Hewitt says via Twitter: “Just uploaded Facebook for iPhone 3.0 to the App Store for review. :)

Hewitt also says he’ll post screen shots and more detais on this Facebook page for the iPhone app next week, and that he’s looking forward to getting started on v. 3.1 tomorrow.

We’ve been tracking 3.0 since details first became available in July. A list of some of the much needed improvements is here. And as a bonus, Hewitt said he’d be able to include video uploads to Facebook from iPhone 3Gs phones as well. And from our most recent post (yes, Hewitt has been teasing this out for weeks):

That means that shortly, we’ll have access to the much-improved app which is scheduled to have features such as a News Feed that is more like the one on Facebook’s site, the ability to “like” items and a new customizable home screen. More importantly, it will also have video support for the iPhone 3GS, something which Hewitt threw-in at the last second, unexpectedly. And perhaps best of all, the app will have the ability to manage events, finally.

It’s likely Apple will approve this app in short order. Not only are they trying to avoid high profile app problems, there’s also not very much in the Facebook app that they or AT&T would take exception to.

If you haven’t heard it, make sure to listen to our interview with Joe Hewitt two years ago when Facebook first launched a special browser-based version of Facebook for the iPhone.

Thanks for the tip, Matthew.

The purchase of FriendFeed is but a sideshow in Facebook's drive to make itself a must-use social networking site, but it does show the lengths the company is willing to go to become king of all social media. This feels early for consolidation in social media, though with profits still elusive, some companies, like FriendFeed, will accept financial shelter when it is offered. The founders, it has been much reported, are former Google stars whose talents may be more profitably used at Facebook.

Would-be users seemed to decide that while FriendFeed's social network aggregation features were useful, that they were not useful enough to justify a separate platform. Over time, I am expecting everything people liked about FriendFeed to show up as part of Facebook, which will become "home base" for many people's online lives. The new social features added to iGoogle home pages only demonstrate how outside of its depth that Google has become. The whole iGoogle portal presentation looks tired and the applets themselves are not terribly useful. I do not need an iGoogle home page, though Google News is where most of the browsers I use open.

Google's inability to become a major player in social networking, either by purchase or better design, is a reason for concern among those wanting to see a Google that does more than search. It is really sad to watch.

Australian businessman dismisses Facebook threats
Fri, Sep 04, 2009
AFP

SYDNEY - An Australian businessman accused of selling "friends" from the social networking site Facebook hit back Friday, saying it would be "very difficult" to stop him.

Facebook warned Thursday that members who bought information from the Australian online marketing company uSocial.net could be banned from the site.

Leon Hill, 24, who founded and owns uSocial.net, agreed that his customers could be breaching Facebook's terms of service - but added that Facebook was almost powerless to stop him.

He said Facebook would be "well within their rights" to ban its members who accepted uSocial.net's offer but that it "would be almost impossible to track what we're doing."

Hill's Brisbane-based firm this week angered Facebook by offering to sell a user 1,000 friends for 177 US dollars (S$255) and 5,000 friends - the limit imposed by Facebook on a standard profile account - for 654 dollars.

Facebook "fan" pages have no limits and uSocial.net said it could supply 1,000 Facebook fans for 177 dollars and 10,000 fans for 1,167 dollars.

Likening his service to a dating agency, Hill said his company manually scrolled through Facebook's millions of pages for users who had listed an interest in or already had links to a particular client's industry.

For example, he said they trawled Facebook on behalf of a dealer in performance car parts to find people with an interest in the automotive industry, who were then sent a friend request or fan suggestion.

"We don't manipulate accounts at all," he said. "We are targeting people for our clients but at the end of the day it's all up to the end user," he said.

Hill said his company did the same thing with microblogging site Twitter, which he said had tried unsuccessfully to stop its members using uSocial.net.

"In the end the thing is that I'm not actually ever doing anything against the terms of service - it's the actual users who purchases my services (who is)," he said.

"Unless they actually say anything, unless they make it known to Facebook or Twitter that they've actually bought my services, there's absolutely nothing they (Facebook or Twitter) can do."

Facebook now has more than 300 million users, making it the world's most popular social networking site.

Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook's founder, announced the news in a blog post, and confirmed that the company was now cash-flow positive, generating revenue independently of third-party investment and funding.

"Facebook now serves 300 million people across the world. It's a large number, but the way we think about this is that we're just getting started on our goal of connecting everyone," wrote Zuckerberg.

"We're also succeeding at building Facebook in a sustainable way. Earlier this year, we said we expected to be cash flow positive sometime in 2010, and I'm pleased to share that we achieved this milestone last quarter. This is important to us because it sets Facebook up to be a strong, independent service for the long term."

Facebook has enjoyed a rapid period of growth in the last two months, going from 250 million users in July to 300 million in September. The social networking site is still steadily adding users in major markets, such as Britain and the United States, and is also making inroads in to other territories. The recent launch of Facebook Lite, a stripped-down basic version of the site for users with slow internet connections, hopes to boost membership numbers in areas such as India and South America.

Facebook, which launched five years ago, has attracted more than $700 million of investment during that time. In 2007, Microsoft paid $240 million for a 1.6 per cent stake, valuing the social networking site at around $15 billion.

Zuckerberg pledged to continue investing in new systems and technologies to make Facebook perform faster and grow efficiently, and serve users in "increasingly deep and innovative ways".

"We face a lot of fun and important challenges that require rethinking the current systems for enabling information flow across the web," he wrote. "The site we all use every day is built by a relatively small group of the smartest engineers and entrepreneurs.

"In fact, the ratio of Facebook users to Facebook engineers makes it so that every engineer here is responsible for more than one million users. It's hard to have an impact like that anywhere else."

Industry analysts believe the milestone could mark a new push by Facebook to dominate the social-networking space, and rival sites, such as the microblogging service Twitter, could be caught up in its wake.

"If Facebook continues to open up its platform and adopt Twitter's best features, it could spell trouble for the Twitterverse," Ben Parr, associate editor at social media blog Mashable, told the BBC. "The world's largest social network is on the warpath."

What Kind of Friend are YOU? The 13 Types on Facebook
by David K. Israel - July 16, 2009 - 8:30 AM

When it comes to parties, I tend to arrive late. With Facebook, one of the centuries biggest parties, I made no exception. To be completely honest, I created an account many moons ago, but only to play Scrabble with a friend back East. He was my one and only friend. But when it came time a couple months ago to create the How Did You Know? fan page (have you joined yet?), I started spending quality time on Facebook, and eventually changed my fake Scrabble name to my real name, added a photo to my profile, and fleshed out some of the info.

So I’m a month into the party now, and I’m starting to see clear trends. Some friends fall into category A, while others B. What about you all? What kind of friend are you? Here’s the category breakdown (and drop a comment if you think I’ve missed any):
A) The Overzealous Updater

This is the friend who can’t go half a day without sharing What’s On His Mind. Honestly people. We really don’t need to know that you’ve just had your second shower of the day. For that matter, we didn’t need to hear about the first one either.
B) The Link-bot

This is the friend who does nothing but share links all day. Links to articles he’s read that he thinks the whole world should be reading, links to movie reviews, links to new games coming on the market, links to his Twitter page where he’s gone and posted 10 more links. There needs to be a limit. Some links are good, especially when they send people to this blog. But let’s impose a 2-link-max rule per day, what do you say?
C) The Groupie

This is the friend who has joined more groups than Marcia Brady did that one year in high school when she was overcommitted and frazzled. Asian Americans in Israel who Support Diplomacy with Iran? Really?
D) I Am My Kids

This is the friend who only uses Facebook to post photos of the little ones, or updates that read: “Tommy didn’t feel well today, so he stayed home from school.” Might as well not even have your own profile, just create one for the kid(s), no?
E) Spies (who used to) Like Us

This is the Ex who only friends you so s/he can spy on you and make sure you have fewer friends that s/he does, and that your new significant other is less attractive than s/he was.

F) The Wanna-Be

This is the person who friends someone with the great hope of becoming friends with that person in real life, be it a minor celeb, or just someone the Wanna-Be really admires from a slight distance.
G) The Two-facer

This is the friend who accepts your friend request just to be polite, but then Hides your updates immediately. Unfortunately, you have no idea who the two-facers are.
H) The Networker

This is the friend whose main purpose on Facebook is to build a list he can tap when he needs to for work/career. You know these friends because they only message you with e-mails that read “So you still over at Viacom?”
I) The OverPoker

No need to explain this one, right?
J) The Get-A-Lifer

This is the hardcore friend who has nothing better to do but subscribe and follow you via SMS.
K) The Attention Seeker*

This is the friend who posts status updates that are purposely vague, and therefore beg for a comment. Their status is all about getting you to respond, getting attention, getting sympathy. “Lori is scared, but hopes everything works out…” [*sent to me by my friend Dawn, who is definitely an M... see below]
L) The Over Suggester

Just stop. Okay? Let me figure out who I want to be friends with, okay? Honestly.
M) The Good Friend

This is the friend who mercifully doesn’t fit in any of the above categories and is, hopefully, just one of many normal, average facebookers you’ve friended. Let’s hear it for the Good Friend!

{Honorable mention: The Foodie — this is the friend who’s always posting updates with photos of plates of food}

{Favorite quote overheard when a friend of a Friend got a new Friend on FB — “Ah man, I’m now friends with my dad… Jesus.”}

Facebook app developer rejects App Store, irony ensues

by Joseph L. Flatley posted Nov 12th 2009 at 11:01AM
We always said that if Apple's arbitrary, inconsistent, and quite frankly baffling approval process didn't get straightened out soon, the defections were going to pick up pace -- and what do we have here? Joe Hewitt, the developer of the well-loved and highly regarded Facebook iPhone app, has flipped the script and rejected the App Store. And, as you'd expect, our man is not mincing his words, stating that his "decision to stop iPhone development has had everything to do with Apple's policies," and that he's "philosophically opposed to the existence of their review process." While Hewitt can't comment on specific future projects (he's still at Facebook, but the app itself has been handed off to another developer) he has mentioned that he'll be devoting his time to web development for mobile devices. As you know, there is no approval process for the world wide web (which is apparent if you've spent any time on Geocities back in the day). Way to give 'em hell, Joe!

Malaysian company acquires Friendster, bets on micropayments

Malaysian company acquires Friendster, bets on micropayments

MOL plans to use tie-ups with retail franchises to attract new users - By Sumner Lemon 10 Dec 2009

SINGAPORE, 10 DECEMBER 2009 - Social networking site Friendster accepted a buyout offer from Malaysia's MOL Global, which hopes to generate revenue from the site using micropayments.

One of the first social networking sites, Friendster was among the most popular Internet sites before it was eclipsed by new entrants, including Facebook and MySpace. While Friendster eventually lost traction among users in most major markets, the company remained popular in Southeast Asia.

Friendster says 90 per cent of its traffic comes from Asia. In August, the site had 20 million active users from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines.

MOL and Friendster, which is privately held, did not disclose financial terms of the acquisition deal.

The buyout extends a partnership between the two companies, announced in October. Under the terms of that deal, MOL will provide a payment platform for Friendster's e-commerce services, Friendster Wallet and Friendster Gift Shop, where users can buy virtual gifts for friends.

Friendster Wallet allows users to make purchases at the online Gift Shop using virtual currency. Users buy the virtual currency, called Friendster Coins, using top-up cards sold at physical shops, such as convenience stores.

"The new combined entity will now build upon that initial set of products to deliver a content distribution network and e-commerce platform," the companies said in a statement.

In addition, MOL plans to use the other business interests of its main shareholder to attract more users to Facebook. Those businesses include franchises in Malaysia and other parts of Southeast Asia for Starbucks, 7-Eleven, Borders, Krispy Kreme, Wendy's, and Papa John's Pizza, the statement said.

worthy? maybe.

FB is on 350,000,000.
FR is on 90,000,000.

doesn't really matter who started first. much like the search engine saga. ..... and then google comes along.
now, to search for something, people would say "let me google on it."

in the social networking circle. FB is the place to be in. there's no equal.
maybe FR is trying to grab the asia market. couple with the integration of physical booth n payment mode, they might just be able to make it work.

http://www.google.com/trends?q=facebook%2C+Friendster%2C+myspace

if any, look for those coming out of China. ie: Qzone. basically a spin from QQ. (THE messenger of choice in China.)
they are on 200,000,000.

data taken from : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_social_networking_websites

there's another one by google. ie: Orkut. market segment India. (that's another big big market if going by population count.)

talks of micropayment has always been in the news. but it really didn't manage to take off since the late 90s. wonder how they would be able to make it work this time round.
