here's something more to fuel the rumour. heh.

toyota can thank the crazy exchange rate for its premature rise to number one. With that the company seems to be making more aggressive decisions, surely to increase the distance between its number one spot and GM. Its latest move seems to be going away from its bland vanilla image and into something a little sexier. We’ll concede that Toyota makes great, affordable and reliable vehicles, but anything is better than the company’s current image.

Japanese sources have indicated that Toyota is seriously considering selling a cheap rear-wheel drive sports coupe. Maybe the advent of drifting and rebirth of rear-drive cars has slapped Toyota squarely in the face to make an affordable FR car.

 By “cheap” we’re not talking in the realm of the Nissan 350Z or even Mazda RX-8. Toyota is talking about introducing an FR, four-seater sports coupe for well under 20K, how’s about $16,000 USD sound? Yes, that’s insane as the Scion tC is already at that pricepoint with a front-wheel drive platform. Even Kei cars cost more than this in Japan.

The tC could be used as a test vehicle for an upcoming FR car, but it might be more work than its worth. What would be the chosen powerplant and transmission? Unless the vehicle loosely based on the IS platform, there’s no donor cars for this cheapy RWD coupe. Let’s see how much fat Toyota can cut out of a car that tops out near 50K, fully loaded.

And the price has to stay down. This vehicle is aimed directly at younger buyers who want into the sports compact market. Can Toyota produce a profitable rear-drive coupe within this range? We aren’t certain, but we do know that it appears Toyota may be trying to rekindle the fun factor of the mid-‘80s Corolla shitbox.

i was talking to jeremy from ricardo while doing my servicing and he showed me a japanese magazine.

inside are all the new cars to be launch in a auto show. new celica, mr-s, supra etc. they WILL all be launched in 2009.

the new celica will have either a 2.4 or 2.5 engine. if it's 2.4, it will be the 2az-fe (camry) engine. if 2.5, it will be the mark-x v6 engine. highly possible, it will be turbo-ed and ff and rated at 280-320ps. smt is a possibility too.

jeremy says it's CONFIRM and price will be cheaper than what i've paid for mine...

my wife has already hinted on the smt version lei...

if you are talking about the engine in a camry, yes. if you are talking about the same engine in a celica, no. it's all about ecu mapping.

example, wish, altis 1.8 and ss1 are all using the same 1zz-fe engine. but mapping gives them all different performance output. ditto?

The 40th Tokyo Motor Show 2007 will be held at Makuhari Messe in Chiba City for 17 days from October 26th (Friday) through November 11th (Sunday) this year. The show will be opened to the public from October 27th (Saturday).

At this year's show, upgraded special events that involve audience participation and experiences will be offered to generate excitement about vehicles, such as five types of test ride programs where visitors can actually come in contact with cars. The entertainment aspect will be heightened so that a wide range of visitors including women and youth, as well as families, can enjoy a full day at the show. Services for visitors have also been enhanced by introducing an official travel agency and making the online ticket system “E-tix.” available.
