GPS - Global Positioning System

came across this website when i was reading the "death valley run" thing...

Quote
From the 18th to the 20th of July 2007, two of Singapore's ultra-marathon runners, Mr Lim Nghee Huat (Chairman of Mountbatten CCC and MediaCorp Editor, Current Affairs) and Mr Yong Yuen Cheng (Vice- Chairman of Mountbatten CSC and National Junior College Teacher) will embark on a 217km run across Death Valley, through extreme temperatures of up to 55 degrees Celsius and a vertical elevation of 4000m, to raise funds for Mountbatten CCC and National Junior College respectively.

http://www.asiatracks.org/dvrun.htm

Quote
SINGAPORE: In a little more than a week, two Singapore athletes will be heading to the Death Valley in America to challenge its terrain.

They are attempting to cover 217 kilometres at the valley, which is the world's hottest and driest place.

The two long-distance runners who will be testing their limits are Lim Nghee Huat, a senior producer with MediaCorp News, and Yong Yuen Cheng, a teacher at National Junior College (NJC).

To support their run, NJC will track their routes using live satellites and their progress can be seen on a screen at the college's amphitheatre round the clock.

These runners will face scorching weather with temperature as high as 56.7 degrees at Death Valley.

During training sessions in Singapore last year, they almost gave up due to the heat, but now, they have other strategies.

Mr Lim said: "I am preparing a cooler box, so we will put ice and water in the box. Approximately every hour or so, I need to put my body in the cold water for a few minutes so that my body temperature will drop."

Mr Yong said: "The total vertical cumulative ascent for the run is 4,000 metres. That is equivalent to more than 1,000 storeys of HDB flat. In order to train myself for that in Singapore, I do staircase training and I also try to do some running for five hours on the Sheares Bridge."

moi: Garmin, where am i now?

moi: i want to go Sepang SIC. bring me there.

garmin: Calculating... turn left 300m, turn left..

moi: oops, miss a turn.

garmin: Re-calculating.. turn right 1.3km. .... .. turn right, then keep left.

==============================

that was how we made it to Nikko hotel while lost in KL. heh. i was super duper lost, and road blind while there.

my girlfriend also mentioned something that didn't strike my mind till late. "this is your first time leading. you trust the GPS ah?"

heh. i do. (but must still keep eyes big big to look for signboard hor. cos some junctions the routing is alittle off. miss that one, and the next turn off is 10km away.) and i was pleasantly surprise when paul radioed "i trust woon to bring us there". .P when we were heading home from Sepang SIC.

ok, let's have a look at the Garmin Nuvi 310 proper. (using a 360 to intro)

I just went down to Sim Lim Perfect watch to get a Nuvi 310. the price quote has dropped. Now for a set, it cost only $530! local warrenty, no map. they can provide the local map for additiona $12.

Great news right?

via = Malsingmaps.com
*price is alittle suspect though.. in any case, it's around the $600 region.

alternatively, check out Malsing's forum on Malsing Trading Post
those Nuvi 300 series goes from around $550 to $650.

Malsingmaps.com is the place for the GPS community (Malaysia n Singapore) Updated maps, SpeedTraps, Places to Eat, FREE! unlike the orginal maps from Garmin that cost like half the price of the unit. if you are wondering what does Malsing stands for, it literally means Malaysia Singapore. simple eh? Read more about it via their Wiki page.

that's about all i have to write about the Garmin Nuvi n Malsingmaps.com.

you might want to check out MCF's post on the Nuvi 610.

in Singapore usually quite safe. can leave in the car.

but it would be a good idea to dismount (via the quick release catch) and put it away from sight. ie: glove box.

that also helps to prevent the unit from getting super hot under the sun parked.

[News] Man using GPS drives into path of train
« Reply #7 on: January 04, 2008, 06:25:12 AM »
via : http://forums.vr-zone.com/showthread.php?t=221324

NEW YORK - A COMPUTER CONSULTANT apparently put too much faith in the GPS technology in his rental car: It took him onto rail tracks as a train barreled toward him.

The driver had turned right, as the global positioning system advised, and the car got stuck on the tracks at the crossing. He jumped out and tried to warn the engineer by waving.

He got out of the way just before the train slammed into the car at 96 kilometres-per-hour, Metro-North Railroad spokesman Dan Brucker said on Thursday. The car was pushed more than 30 metres during the fiery crash.

Some 500 passengers on the train were stranded for more than two hours during the Wednesday evening rush hour. No injuries were reported. More than 10 other trains were canceled or delayed by up to 90 minutes, affecting 10,000 people.

The accident heavily damaged 76 metres of rail, which was repaired by Thursday morning, Mr Brucker said.

The railroad identified the 32-year-old driver as Mr Bo Bai, who had a California driver's license with a Sunnyvale address but told police he was living in Fishkill, New York.

It said that he was issued a minor summons for obstructing a railroad crossing and that he and his rental company would be liable for the damage, estimated in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

There was no telephone listing for Mr Bai in Sunnyvale, Fishkill or the surrounding areas. -- AP

May get the Nuvi 200W instead as I do not need additional function except the basic function of a GPS navigator.  Check with Perfect Watch @ Sim Lim and it cost S$490 without map.  May get it from vPOSTUSA instead...

Accuracy wise, the NUVI series should be the same, right?

Not exactly same as most standalone are using SIRF III chip which is much more stable.  Some GPS get a locked position much faster than other mah... I have used the HP phone and to get a GPS lock take such a long time...

I heard that LTA may be implementing the FM traffic information so that GPS can pick it up and route according.  Any idea this is true and if yes, when will it be implementing.

If it is implementing soon, then perhaps I should get the one that can receive FM traffic information.

Group buy? ;)
